You're the kind of engineer other engineers get better around.

You're comfortable across the full stack, you take agentic engineering seriously, and you've reached the point in your career where the interesting problems are as much about people, direction and standards as they are about code.

If that's you, keep reading.

You'll be embedded into the product team of one of the UK's leading procurement platforms as your first project here.

The platform connects organisations managing construction projects with the suppliers who deliver them.

It's high‑traffic, and the architectural decisions that will define its next five years are still being made.

You'll be making them, and you'll be accountable for how they play out.

The platform runs on PHP/Laravel with a growing set of Python services, and its front end is built on Laravel Nova.

Where it goes next is still an open question, and you'll be one of the people shaping the answer.

Beyond this project, our work is generally Type Script and React, so your front end skills won't be parked here.

This is a leadership role, not a senior role with a better title.

You'll set the technical standards the team works to, decide how agentic tooling is used safely at scale, and be the person the client looks to when they want a straight answer about risk, effort or trade‑offs.

To do this well, you'll need to be someone who

  • Has strong experience at Lead level, or is a senior ready to step up, in commercial, production environments
  • Is comfortable working across both PHP/Laravel and Python, even if you're deeper in one than the other
  • Has shipped LLM or agentic tooling into real systems, and can define the standards that make it safe for a whole team
  • Makes the engineers around you better, through code review, mentoring and the standards you set
  • Has solid front end experience, ideally React or Type Script, and is willing to work with Laravel Nova on this project

Bonus points if you

  • Have built and deployed cloud‑native applications on Azure
  • Can provision and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform
  • Are handy with Node. js

Here's what you get in return.

You'll be in the room when the big architectural decisions are made, because making them is your job.

Your technical judgment carries real weight here, and so does the responsibility that comes with it.

The limit on agentic engineering isn't what one person can produce, it's whether a whole team can use it well.

Defining that for a live, high‑traffic platform is a problem very few engineers have been given yet.

You'd be one of them.

Working here means leading across multiple clients and contexts over time, not just one. That's a different kind of career development than most roles can offer.

Beyond the work itself, here's what benefits come with the role.

  • 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • 5 Impact Days for learning, innovation or volunteering
  • Flexible working environment
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • Annual wellbeing budget plus 2 wellbeing days
  • Mental health support
  • Company Mac
  • Location

You can work from home, in the office or a mix of both. We just ask that you're based within 30 miles of one of our offices:

  • Edinburgh
  • Newcastle
  • Leeds
  • Manchester
  • London

Sound like you?

Apply below and we'll set up a call to find out whether we're a good fit for each other.

We'll want to talk about where you've hit the limits of agentic tools, what you put in place to handle it, and how you rolled that out to a team.

Your answer will tell us more than your CV.

How to prepare for a job interview at hedgehog lab

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If hedgehog lab uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
