Are you an innovative, enthusiastic and passionate Teacher of Food Preparation and Nutrition? This post provides a unique opportunity to work within a high‑performing and growing 11 to 18 grammar school with a large sixth form and exceptional students. We are proud to be Secondary School of the Year for Academic Excellence 2025, Ranked No 1 in the North of England – The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2025. We are committed to supporting flexible working and welcome applications from candidates seeking part‑time or flexible arrangements.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Teacher of Food Preparation and Nutrition to join our highly successful Design and Technology department. Design and Technology at Heckmondwike Grammar School is a high‑performing subject area with a strong track record of excellent GCSE and A Level outcomes. The department is staffed by a dedicated team of six teachers, supported by two skilled technicians, all of whom are committed to delivering an exceptional educational experience. Staff consistently go above and beyond to ensure students make outstanding progress and develop a genuine enthusiasm for the subject.

The department is well resourced, offering a wide range of specialist tools and equipment that enable students to produce high‑quality practical work. At Key Stage 3, students study Design and Technology for three hours per fortnight, following a carousel model that includes Food, Graphics and Resistant Materials. Projects are designed to develop core knowledge, practical skills and creative thinking, encouraging students to respond to real‑world challenges with innovative solutions. Independent learning is strongly promoted, with many students choosing to make additional use of department facilities outside lesson time.

At Key Stage 4, Food Preparation and Nutrition is offered as an option, with students currently following the AQA GCSE specification. Students receive five one‑hour lessons per fortnight, allowing them to develop both their practical skills and theoretical understanding in depth. The department is forward‑thinking and committed to ongoing curriculum development, with a strong focus on enriching students' experiences. A passion for the subject and a willingness to contribute to extracurricular activities are therefore highly valued.

We welcome applications from both experienced teachers and Early Career Teachers who are eager to develop their practice within a supportive and high‑achieving school environment. Above all, we are looking for a colleague who brings enthusiasm, creativity, and a positive commitment to the continued success of the department.
