We move 17 million tonnes of freight a year for customers in the industrial, energy and construction markets. The company operates 95 locomotives and over 1000 wagons. Heavy Haul Rail’s team supports customer deliveries to over 100 locations across the UK, running 250 trains per week. Heavy Haul Rail also supports the renewal and maintenance of the rail infrastructure and supports passenger train operators and rolling stock companies, including the provision of drivers and route conducting services.

What You’ll Do

A vacancy has arisen for a multi-skilled fitter to undertake the servicing, maintenance and repair of locomotives at our Mendip Vehicle Maintenance Facilities (Merehead VMF and Whatley VMF). We currently maintain fleets of Class 59 and Class 66 locomotives at our Mendip sites. The successful applicant will be responsible for helping to achieve team goals and objectives.

Responsibilities include:

  • Adhere to health & safety and local safety policy requirements, and other safety and technical standards.
  • Ensure Heavy Haul Rail company engineering standards and procedures are applied and followed.
  • Maintain, service, fault find and repair locomotives in accordance with approved maintenance plans.
  • Ensure all relevant paperwork for examinations and repairs is correctly completed to company standards.
  • Maintaining high standards of housekeeping to ensure a clean and safe environment.

What We’re Looking For

The successful applicant should be a safety conscious and motivated self-starter, a fully versatile team member who has well-established experience within a railway maintenance depot environment or a similar engineering background. A flexible approach to working hours is essential as Mendip VMF operates a 24/7 shift roster.

Requirements:

  • Commitment to safe working practices.
  • Apprentice trained or time served in an engineering environment.
  • Experience in electrical and/or mechanical maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of rolling stock would be advantageous.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications and operational systems.
  • The ability to work accurately under pressure while maintaining a focus on compliance and safety.
  • A flexible and proactive approach to changing operational demands.
  • A Level 3 engineering qualification or equivalent.
