About the role
This role offers the opportunity to lead small class teams and deliver individualised learning opportunities for secondary-aged pupils with severe, profound, or complex learning difficulties, complex medical conditions, and associated challenging behaviours.
Key Responsibilities
- Adaptive Curriculum Delivery: Deliver highly differentiated lesson plans using the EQUALS curriculum and Total Communication strategies (Makaton, PECS, AAC).
- IEP & Data Implementation: Follow and implement robust, SMART IEPs, monitoring and recording daily student progress using specialised SEND assessment frameworks.
- Behaviour & Sensory Support: Implement Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans, sensory diets, and Team Teach techniques to manage challenging behaviours.
- Medical & Physical Care: Work with the school nursing team to follow Individual Healthcare Plans (IHCPs), accommodating PEG feeding, seizure management, and hoisting.
- Classroom Leadership: Direct and deploy the permanent classroom team of TAs and HLTAs during cover shifts.
About You (Person Specification)
Essential Criteria
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS, with evidence of professional development.
- Proven experience teaching and managing classroom support staff, implementing learning plans, and tracking student progress (including Primary KS1/KS2 experience welcomed).
- Strong understanding of the UK SEND Code of Practice, alternative communication methods, and certified training in positive handling or willingness to train.
- High emotional resilience, exceptional empathy, patience, a good sense of humor, and flexibility to adapt to changing classroom dynamics.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience teaching SEND, preferably within a UK Special School setting.
- Experience with the EQUALS curriculum, autism provision, or writing SMART targets for high-needs learners.
- Training in PEG feeding, Midazolam administration, or high level of physical fitness for active handling.
