The Security Protection Officer role is responsible for ensuring operational excellence, whilst maintaining a high standard of security and protection. The Security Protection team operates in all Terminal landside areas around Heathrow Airport and undertakes security patrols both inside and outside of the terminal building whilst still supporting security operations in airside areas on an ad-hoc or during a critical event.
The principal responsibilities of Security Protection Officers can be categorised around the four aspects of our security triangle: serve, protect and grow whilst maintaining safety for all passengers and colleagues. The role of every member of the team working in security is to balance the delivery of all four priorities, all of the time: Safety, Protect, Serve and Grow.
- Always behave safely, supporting the delivery of a safety culture and focusing on reducing risks, whilst maintaining high professional standards.
- Take personal responsibility for helping others to work safely and take action to correct any unsafe behaviours.
- Patrol our terminals and the surrounding areas to ensure that buildings are secure and potential risks are identified and minimised.
- Deal with Heathrow’s coded incidents following the process.
- Provide early detection following Heathrow’s behavioural detection protocols and report any suspicious activity including hostile reconnaissance, low level crime, protesters and taxi touts who may be soliciting.
- Support the business with vulnerable persons including missing/lost individuals, trafficking, mental health issues, rough sleepers and asylum seekers.
- Provide reassurance to passengers and colleagues and act as a deterrent by demonstrating a visible security presence in landside areas across all terminals.
- Develop and build good working relationships with Team Heathrow, law enforcement and other stakeholders across our terminals.
- Patrol in line with the Heathrow Security Patrolling Risk Assessment to focus on key risk areas.
- Use the QR phone to carry out patrols.
- Take pride in good levels of attendance and recognise the importance of attendance in driving efficiency and managing cost.
- The role requires dynamic decision making, prioritisation of workload and flexibility, for example supporting operational situations such as an evacuation of an area, that may arise in a way that maintains protection.
- Work as part of a team, responding quickly to the changing needs of passengers and stakeholders.
- The role is demanding and can be challenging and pressured at times whilst dealing with a variety of situations including vulnerable and aggressive individuals.
- Adapt your approach by asking probing and detailed questions (training will be provided) which some individuals may find difficult to answer.
Security Protection Officers must have the necessary skills and attributes for the role including good decision-making, verbal and written communication skills, resilience, physical attributes, and customer focus. You must have excellent observational skills, with an eye for detail.
