Role Description

The Lead Solar Installer is a full-time, on-site role based in the midlands and covering projects across England and Wales. The Lead Solar Installer will be responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient installation of solar systems on residential and commercial properties. Day-to-day tasks include planning and organizing installation work, reading and interpreting technical drawings, leading installation crews, and ensuring that all solar panels, mounting structures, and electrical components are correctly installed and commissioned. The role involves hands‑on use of power and hand tools, performing quality checks, identifying and resolving on‑site issues, and maintaining compliance with relevant safety standards and regulations. The Lead Solar Installer will coordinate with project managers, suppliers, and customers, provide guidance and training to team members, and document work completed through reports and system handover documentation.

Qualifications

  • Foundational Electrical Competence: Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation or equivalent core electrotechnical qualification.
  • Wiring Regulations: Current 18th Edition (BS 7671) certification, which includes Section 712 for solar photovoltaic systems.

Desirable

  • Level 3 Award: Complete a dedicated short course such as the City & Guilds 2922 Solar PV or EAL Level 3 Award in the Installation of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong knowledge of solar power and solar systems, including design basics, installation methods, and system performance.
  • Practical experience working installing solar PV on various roof types.
  • Proficiency in using power tools and hand tools safely and effectively for installation and maintenance work.
  • Understanding of electrical safety, wiring practices, and relevant UK building and electrical regulations (formal qualification or certification is an advantage).
  • Ability to read technical drawings, roof layouts, and manufacturer specifications, and translate them into accurate on‑site work.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to high‑quality workmanship and safety standards.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, and customers.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
  • Work at height and in varying weather conditions.
  • Prior experience as a senior or lead installer in solar or heat pump installations is highly beneficial.
