WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

To become an English Lecturer in our English & Maths department, we need someone who is experienced, organised and has a passion for teaching. The successful candidate will have the chance to acquire new skills and develop their abilities in a wide range of activities. We have a variety of students from the surrounding area; we are a welcoming and inclusive community that champions diversity and equality across our college. Our departments collaborate to establish and uphold the inclusive HoW culture, we keep this in mind as we manage interactions with the public, fellow employees, and nearby schools. Although these positions are based at our Redditch or Bromsgrove campuses, all applicants must be prepared to travel to our other campuses or surrounding areas as required.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

  • Deliver high-quality, engaging teaching and assessment, including planning lessons, monitoring progress, providing regular assessment, and giving timely feedback to support learner achievement.
  • Carry out initial, diagnostic, and milestone assessments, using results to inform learning plans and support progress.
  • Develop and use appropriate teaching resources, lesson plans, and schemes of work.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and achievement, and share these with relevant stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to address attendance, behaviour, and engagement issues.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, meetings, and quality assurance activities such as standardisation.
  • Support learner progress reporting and engage with parents/carers where required.
  • Complete relevant administrative tasks and keep up to date with developments in English and related processes.

AIM AND PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The purpose of the role is to plan and deliver high quality teaching, learning and assessment in either GCSE or functional skills English to learners across a range of curriculum areas including 16-18 study programme and adult provision. The postholder will undertake administrative and developmental duties that contribute to improving standards and achievements and maximise the learner experience within their Mathematics study.

KEY ROLES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • To deliver high quality innovative and engaging teaching, learning and assessment to a range of learners as part of their programme of study by:
    • planning, preparing, teaching and assessing as required by your line manager providing students with a well-planned, sufficiently individualised learning and assessment experience.
    • effectively managing and monitoring the learning process.
    • providing regular assessment opportunities.
    • providing timely and constructive feedback.
    • guiding and supporting learners to achieve their learning goals.
  • To work within the English team to proactively raise learner aspirations and improve achievements for all learners from their starting points.
  • To conduct initial and diagnostic assessments of all learners to determine starting points and develop learning plans to enable them to make progress from their starting points.
  • To conduct milestone assessments as agreed with the Head of English and provide feedback within the agreed timescale, ensuring feedback supports learners to improve.
  • To teach an agreed programme of hours across any of the campuses including revision and intervention sessions.
  • Produce and develop teaching resources to support your delivery including schemes of work and lesson plans.
  • Keep accurate and timely information about learner attendance, achievement and progress to be shared with the Head of English, CRQ leaders and directors, parents and learners.
  • To liaise and work with vocational teams and CRQ leaders to address issues with learner attendance, behaviour and engagement to maximise progress and achievements.
  • To attend staff meetings to develop and improve the curriculum.
  • Support learner progress evenings through the production of reports and meeting with parents and vocational teaching teams.
  • To take part in administrative activities to support the learning of English delivery by supporting the collection and collation of data relating to learner's entry qualifications when establishing groups at the start of the year and in ensuring group lists are accurate and up to date throughout the year.
  • Take part in verification and standardisation activities where required.
  • Keep up to date with developments and qualifications in the areas of English.
  • Where appropriate, liaise with other departments (e.g., Exams and MIS).

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • To commit to the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
  • To participate in the College’s Performance Management Scheme and attend such training events as are necessary to enable him/her to carry out the duties of the job description.
  • To continually improve teaching, learning and assessment through proactive CPD and sharing best practice.
  • To actively participate in the College’s Quality System, including quality improvement strategies and initiatives.
  • To undertake such other duties as may be assigned commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post.
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of him/her and for others affected by his/her work.
  • To actively support College Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity policies.
  • To operate/conduct all HR tasks and functions within the principles of GDPR.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE – Academic staff:

The appointment is subject to the Conditions of Service for Academic Staff. The work pattern of a Lecturer is not necessarily linked to the traditional academic year. All successful applicants will undergo the following checks:

  • 2 x References, one of which must be your current or most recent employer
  • Qualification validation check.

SALARY:

The salary range for this post is from £26,687 to £30,753 per annum/pro rata for unqualified lecturers and £31,503 to £41,413 per annum/pro rata for qualified lecturers. Starting salary will be dependent upon experience and qualifications. Once you have successfully passed your probationary period, your salary will increase within the salary band on an annual incremental basis, until you reach the top of the salary scale. Increments are in August.

TEACHING QUALIFICATION:

Applicants are required to hold an appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to undertake and gain the Certificate in Education and Training within 2 years of their appointment. Successful applicants will be required to attend the course on‑site as the College delivers the course in‑house. Please note – whilst obtaining a teaching qualification is a contractual requirement, the College reviews its CPD budget on an annual basis regarding availability of funds and cannot therefore guarantee that newly appointed staff will receive either part or full funding for the course fees. However, student loan facilities are available.

MATHS AND ENGLISH:

All staff are required to have a minimum level 2 qualification in both English and Maths. If you are not already in receipt of one or both qualifications, you will be expected to obtain them during your employment at the College.

SAFEGUARDING:

The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All newly appointed staff will be required to undertake safeguarding training following their appointment. Heart of Worcestershire College adheres to the Department of Education’s guidance on ‘Keeping children safe in Education’. As part of your induction, you will be required to read and understand part 1 of this document.

VALIDATION OF QUALIFICATIONS:

The College will undertake qualification validation by writing to the appropriate educational institute. Only those qualifications which are essential for the post will be followed up.

HOURS OF WORK:

We currently have 3 vacancies available, offering a range of working hours: 14.8 hours per week, 18.5 hours per week and 29.6 hours per week. Actual hours of work and desk duty time will be agreed with your manager. Please specify in your application what hours you would prefer.

ANNUAL LEAVE:

The post carries 37 annual leave days with an additional eight public bank holidays plus a further five concessionary days as ‘leave to be taken at the principal’s discretion’. Annual leave will be pro rata if part time. Please note that only in exceptional circumstances, with your director’s permission, will staff be able to take more than 3 consecutive weeks of leave in any leave year.

PENSION SCHEME:

The College operates an occupational pension scheme, namely the ‘Teachers Pensions’.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

All newly appointed staff must serve a 9‑month probationary period. During the probationary period you will have to complete the corporate staff induction, a Teaching and Learning Induction session if you deliver learning and additional mandatory courses on: Equality & Diversity session, Keeping Children safe in Education, Safeguarding Training session, Prevent, GDPR, Cyber Security and Health & Safety training session. Failure to complete this will prevent you from successfully completing your probation.

LOCATION:

The successful applicant will be based at either Redditch or Bromsgrove but may be required to work at other locations from time to time. Please specify your preferred location in your application.

All successful applicants will be required to undertake all mandatory training and update sessions and any appropriate training and development as required, including Health and Safety.
