Hearst UK operate a hybrid working model of four days per week in the office and one day working from home. Our office is based at House of Hearst, 30 Panton Street, St James's, London, SW1Y 4AJ, where teams collaborate in person and connect across brands and functions.

This is a fast-paced, high-impact position at the heart of some of the UK's most iconic brands - Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Prima, Red, Runner's World and Women's Health. You'll take ownership of sub-editing content to the highest editorial standards, second-reading pages with a sharp eye for detail, and confidently proofreading and signing off pages before they go live or to print. Accuracy, tone, legal awareness and brand voice all sit in your remit if it carries the masthead, you help ensure it’s right.

Working closely with the Deputy Chief Sub, Chief Subs and Group Chief Sub, you’ll play a key role in driving the entire subbing and production process. From first copy through to final pages sent to press, you’ll help keep everything moving – solving problems, protecting quality, and making sure deadlines are hit without compromise. It’s a role for someone who thrives under pressure, loves the craft of editing, and takes real pride in shaping polished, powerful content that reaches millions.

Main Duties:

  • Sub-edit and fit copy to layout across all pages, rigorously fact-checking every detail and relentlessly pursuing accuracy.
  • Rewrite and refine content where needed to improve flow, strengthen structure, question inconsistencies and fill gaps to ensure clarity for the reader.
  • Write compelling display copy in line with house style, safeguarding each brand’s distinct tone and ensuring pages consistently meet the highest editorial standards for quality and accuracy.
  • Second-read subbed layouts on proof and confidently sign off pages for publication, ensuring all necessary legal checks are completed and approvals secured where required.
  • Proactively identify and flag editorial or layout issues to the Group Chief Sub-editor, taking ownership of maintaining standards and resolving problems efficiently.
  • Liaise effectively with Marketing and other relevant departments to ensure pages meet commercial and cross-functional requirements.
  • Take initiative in supporting the Group Chief Sub, Chief Subs and Deputy Chief Sub during busy production periods, act as an ambassador for Hearst UK and its values, and undertake additional duties aligned with your skills, qualifications and experience as required.

  • Experience working on a consumer title (desirable), with strong working knowledge of InDesign and CMS (essential).
  • Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail, with a meticulous and highly organised approach to your work.

  • A proactive mindset, using sound judgement, initiative and strong problem-solving skills to keep standards high and production running smoothly.
