Purpose of the Role
The Baby Room Leader is responsible for ensuring all children receive high-quality care, are kept safe, and are supported through stimulating, developmentally appropriate experiences in line with the Curriculum for Wales (Non-Maintained Settings).
The role includes the day-to-day leadership and organisation of the baby room, ensuring high standards in childcare, staff performance, communication, and environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Baby Room Leader is accountable for the overall performance of the room, including:
- ? Quality of care and learning
- ? Staff performance and consistency
- ? Parent communication
- ? Compliance with nursery policies and regulatory standards
- Leadership and Staff Management
- ? Lead the room by example, promoting a positive, professional and respectful culture
? Induct new staff using the baby room induction sheet (prior to this management will go over the - main policies and procedures, compulsory training, staff handbook and set up a fob pass)
? Any new staff member awaiting an updated DBS check will not be allowed to work alone with children, perform nappy changes, or assist with toileting until management has confirmed - otherwise during their induction.
? Ensure all staff understand the Staff Operations Chart which is clearly displayed in the room ? Supervise staff, including: - o Supervisionsevery3months
- o Annualappraisals(withmanagementsupportwhererequired)
? Manage staff performance within the room and accelerate concerns where improvements are not - made – practitioners are expected to follow the expectations set out in the ‘Practitioner Job Description - Expectations’
? Provide ongoing coaching, training and reminders to ensure consistent standards
? Support staff to progress in their roles, encouraging them to take ownership of their - responsibilities and undertake training and development in areas of interest
? Maintain staffing levels and organise cover where required
? Visitors, volunteers, or agency workers must never be left alone with children and are not - permitted to perform nappy changes or assist with toileting. All staff in the room should be reminded of this policy.
- New Children (Settling in)
? Oversee all settling-in sessions with parents (All About Me paperwork carried out in the room on the first settle‑in session by the room leader or the key worker if they are trained and competent)

? Ensure staff complete observations to a high standard
? Monitor and maintain consistent, high‑quality handovers ? Ensure accurate, real‑time recording of:
o Nappies, bottles, meals, sleep on paper records in the rooms
? Ensure

o Updated at least twice daily with accurate nappy, bottle, meal information (checking accuracy against the real‑time logs) o Updatedwithphotosatleastweekly

Children Moving to Plantos (Transitions)
? Monthly review of children due to move to Plantos (on 1st of the month after turning two) ? Ensure:
o Exit Assessments are completed
o Parent meetings or phone consultations are arranged
o TransitionsessionsinPlantosareorganised(withmanagementoversight) o Handover of child development records to the Plantos room leader
? Support smooth transitions so the Plantos room can complete their initial six‑week assessment
Children with ALN/Behavioural needs
? Ensure an ‘Emerging Needs Form’ is completed and handed to the ALNCo/Behavioural lead for assessment
Parent Partnership and Communication
? Build strong relationships with parents and carers

? Oversee key workers as the main point of contact and monitor quality of communication
? Provide training and guidance to staff on effective behaviour
? Organise monthly ‘stay and play’ sessions for parents to attend
? Handle parent concerns raised informally within the room (if the term “complaint” is used, inform
management to initiate formal procedures)
? Escalate unresolved concerns to management
? Send routine, non‑sensitive communications to parents
? Ensure all major updates or changes are communicated by management only
Room Organisation and Environment
? Maintain a safe, clean and stimulating environment ? Ensure:
o Displaysofkeyworkersandkeychildrenareuptodate o Pegsareorganisedandupdated
o Bottles, dummies, clothes, and shoes are tidy
o A lost property box is maintained
? Ensure stock and resources cupboard is organised, well maintained, and tidy
? Ensure sufficient stock in the rooms (including baby wipes, tissues, blue roll, nappy sacks, PPE
aprons and gloves, black and green bin bags) and report to management if new stock is needed ? Organise and delegate:
o Cleaning rotas
o Activity planning
o Daily room responsibilities
? If other nursery areas are used these must be kept clean and tidy and left in the condition they were found in (for example the sensory room, nursery garden, Temple, Forest School). If anything is broken or damaged when using these areas this must be reported to management.
? Monitor correct bin use within the room, ensuring staff follow recycling rules and bin procedures, and provide regular reminders to the team as needed.
Safeguarding, Health and Safety
? Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children, staff, and visitors
? Follow safeguarding procedures and complete a ‘Voice of Concern Form’ for concerns submitted
to management
? Ensure medication is stored and administered appropriately in accordance with the nursery’s
Medication Policy
? Maintain accurate accident, incident, and attendance records ? Ensure all risk assessments and safety checks are completed ? Report broken items or DIY issues to management
Curriculum and Child Development
? Promote a nurturing, responsible environment that supports early development and meets individual needs across all areas of development
? Deliver the Curriculum for Wales through engaging, age‑appropriate activities

? Monitor staff implementation of planning and learning activities
? Ensure key workers record regular and high quality observations
? Liaise with the ALNCo/Behavioural lead where appropriate to support children, including
completing Emerging Needs Forms where required
? Liaise with the Welsh Language Officer to implement Welsh language displays and activities and
effectively implement the Welsh language policy within the room
Professional Conduct
? Promote and model positive behaviour at all times
? Treat all staff with respect and professionalism
? Work collaboratively with nursery management, Plantos room leader for transitions,
ALNCo/Behavioural lead, Welsh Language officer, parents and third parties as required ? Commit to ongoing professional development
