Performs a variety of venipuncture techniques and collects and processes blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides guidance and training to subordinate phlebotomists.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vacutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles.
  • Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks supplies on carts and hand trays.
  • Performs quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations; trains and mentors subordinate staff.
  • Ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards and practices.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking.

Requirements

Meet the educational and experience requirements for certification as a phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board/agency.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required

Current phlebotomist certification from a nationally recognized board/agency: ASCP; or CVAS-Certified Venous Access Specialist; or ASPT-American Society Phlebotomist Technician; or NHA-National Healthcareer Association; or NCCT-Phlebotomy National Center for Competency Testing; or ACA-American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals; or Medical2; or NPA-National Phlebotomy Association; or Phlebotomy Technician from MedCA, or Becksford, or AMT-American Medical Technologists, or NPS-National Performance Specialist certifications.
