Job Summary: We are currently seeking an Accredited Clinical Coder to support a time-limited clinical coding project, expected to last up to 6 months. This role will contribute to a critical phase of our work with HealthHarmonie and NHS partners, focusing on the accurate and timely translation of patient data to support performance monitoring, commissioning, and clinical governance. The post holder will independently code inpatient episodes using ICD-10 and OPCS-4, including complex and multi-specialty cases. You will play a key part in ensuring our submissions meet accuracy, timeliness, and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Extract, interpret, and code clinical data from a variety of sources (case notes, discharge summaries, diagnostics, EPR).
- Apply ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes in accordance with national standards and HealthHarmonie/Trust guidelines.
- Code complex inpatient cases, including long-stay and high-cost drug episodes.
- Liaise with clinical staff to clarify ambiguous or incomplete documentation.
- Ensure coding supports PbR, SUS reporting, audit, and national data requirements.
Data Quality and Performance
- Achieve required accuracy and productivity targets.
- Perform data validation and quality checks on own coding.
- Participate in audits and resolve discrepancies where identified.
- Keep knowledge up to date on coding standards, classifications, grouping logic, and tariff implications.
Team Contribution and CPD
- Attend team meetings, training sessions, and CPD activities.
- Maintain Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) status and contribute to a culture of accuracy and learning.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) with NCCQ (UK).
- Strong NHS clinical coding experience, including complex inpatient episodes.
- Proficiency in ICD-10 and OPCS-4, with a sound grasp of national standards.
- Medical terminology, anatomy, and disease process understanding.
- High attention to detail, analytical thinking, and independent working ability.
- Experience with EPR systems and clinical coding software.
Desirable:
- Familiarity with HRGs, grouper logic, and income-related coding implications.
- Experience with coding software (e.g., 3M, Medicode).
- Participation in audits, peer review, or mentoring.
