The post holder will be a valuable member of a successful electronic medical equipment (EME) team who will build on their basic skills and education to be able to perform electrical safety testing (EST) and some planned preventative maintenance (PPM) under the direction of the Deputy Head of Medical Engineering.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and flexible Trainee Engineer to join a dynamic team of engineers providing a comprehensive repair, maintenance and service to a range of healthcare providers.

The Trainee Engineer will have a good grounding in electrical and electronic systems.

Full manufacturer training will be provided to enable the individuals to work independently.

Main duties of the job

The role calls for someone from an Electronic Engineering background, and as such, the post holder will require knowledge across the range of technologies and services that fall under the responsibility of this post.

The post holder will assist in the preventative maintenance and electrical safety testing of a range of medical devices to ensure the EME department is meeting its compliance and KPI targets.

  • Under supervision, carry out preventative maintenance, and electrical safety testing
  • Communicate with clinical users staff to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment.
  • Undertake fault-finding to diagnose problems.
  • Check that equipment performs to manufacturer’s specification.
  • Carry out calibration, quality control, safety, commissioning and acceptance testing.
  • Carry out commissioning and decommissioning of medical devices
  • Undertaking loan medical device acceptance testing
  • Remove unsafe/uneconomic equipment from service and prepare it for safe disposal
  • Liaise with clinical staff to adjust planned maintenance schedules in response to short-term clinical needs.
  • Maintain auditable maintenance and technical records on department’s asset management system to comply with departments ISO9001 accreditation.
  • Take responsibility for all tools and equipment within the post holder’s care.
  • Ensure workshop facilities are kept clear and well ordered and that all equipment is maintained to acceptable standards.
  • Liaise with manufacturers to obtain information pertaining to equipment faults / spare parts
  • Keep accurate records of all work performed and update all appropriate records.
  • Inform the Deputy Head of Medical Engineering and other EME staff of the condition and performance of the equipment within the post holder’s care.
  • Participate in meetings with the Head of Medical Engineering and the wider EME team
  • Ensure customers receive a high quality, prompt and efficient service and are kept up to date on the progress of their outstanding work.
  • Be familiar with and follow incident reporting procedure.
  • Prioritise and manage own work load
  • Keep abreast of technical developments.

Enrol in appropriate Continuing Professional Development program.

Attend suitable seminars and courses as part of personal development and to further the work of the Department.

  • Attend Manufacturers training courses as required
  • Ensure all activities are carried out within the departmental QMS framework and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all activities are carried out within HPL policies, i. e. Control of Infection, Standing Financial Instructions, etc.
  • Carry out all duties in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, relevant Statutory Regulations, Approved Codes of Conduct and Local Rules.
  • When working in other departments, the Post holder will liaise with local heads of department, medical consultants, superintendents, nursing sisters or their representatives as appropriate, adhering to local policies and practices.
  • The Post holder will behave courteously and professionally at all times and seek to ensure that the highest level of service is provided by EME Services.
  • Perform other appropriate duties, which may be required from time to time by the Head of Medical Engineering
  • Identify and escalated perceived risks to the Head of Medical Engineering where appropriate
  • The post holder will be expected to be working in less than desirable working conditions i. e.: dirty and soiled equipment.
  • The post holder must be able to move and carry equipment in excess of 20Kg
  • Travel to other sites covered by the department is expected as part of the role. The ability to drive is expected as part of this role

Qualifications

  • HNC / HND level education, equivalent professional qualifications or relevant experience of operating at this level
  • Additional specialist knowledge acquired through Manufacture training or equivalent experience
  • Registration as Clinical Technologist or Scientist
  • Knoweldge and Experience
  • Experience with EQUIP or similar asset management systems
  • Experience of use of Microsoft Office applications e. g. Word, excel, outlook
  • OEM training on medical devices
  • Experience of working in the patient environment
