Internal Title: Senior Scientist I
Biomarkers are critical components of translational research, enabling robust therapeutic and mechanistic hypothesis testing in early and late clinical development, and as precision medicine enables covering the potential context of use e.g. confirm target engagement and pathway modulation, assess efficacy and response, PK/PD, safety, disease modification, and compound differentiation that directly support program decision making. As a Scientist in Biomarker Development (BMD), you will be identifying and implementing new methodologies, developing and validating innovative biomarker solutions, delivering high quality and impactful data enabling the development of advance clinical programs. You will work in close collaboration in matrix environment with biomarker activity lead and clinical teams to implement internal and external biomarker activities, provide interpretation of results to enable mechanistic, safety and efficacy understanding.
This is an exciting laboratory based opportunity to join the Molecular & Cellular Sciences (MCS) team within Biomarker Development (BMD) and Translational Medicine (TM) at the Novartis Biomedical Research (BR). BMD mission is to deliver cutting‑edge biomarkers including proteins, metabolites, cells, genetics, genomics, imaging and digital endpoints with operational excellence, a data‑driven mindset, timely delivery, and strong internal and external partnerships. We integrate biomarker modalities, data, technologies, and disease understanding to enable decision‑making across all drug development milestones.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise with a special focus on ligand binding assay such as ELISAs (MSD, Luminex, ELLA), mass spectrometry, point‑of‑care testing.
- Develop, validate and implement targeted singleplex / multiplex biomarker assays internally and/or at external vendors.
- Present results at internal meetings and in collaboration with MCS Activity Lead.
- Work in a matrix environment and collaborate with a team of lab scientists to apply innovative biomarker solutions.
- Work independently design, execute, and interpret experiments.
- Ensure high quality and timely delivery of internal and external results.
- Conduct activities in compliance with Novartis policies, Values and Behavior and relevant guidelines.
- Network internally to expand scientific and technical knowledge.
- This is an on‑site role (100%).
Essential Requirements
- BA/MS in Biology, biochemistry or related discipline with 3-4 plus years of professional hands‑on experience in Method Development/Validation of immunoassays in industry or biotechnology environment required. Bachelors with 6-8 plus years of experience in industry or biotechnology environment may be considered.
- Proficiency running variety of immunoassay platforms such as MSD, Luminex, Ella etc.
- Experience with Quanterix Simoa and Mass Spectrometry is a plus.
- Implement best practices for operation and maintenance of instrumentation.
- Experience in troubleshooting of immunoassays and assay transfer to CROs.
- Experience with multiplex assays and profiling platforms is highly desired.
- Experience with automated Western blots, Cobas is a plus.
- Illustrated ability to be creative, self‑motivated, work collaboratively and independently.
- Analytical thinking, willingness to accept responsibility, and teamwork skills.
- Experience working in a global organization and matrix‑resourcing model.
- Good Computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Soft MaxPro, SMART Book, Spotfire, GraphPad Prism, Watson LIMS).
- Good communication skills for oral and written in English.
- Understanding of regulatory requirement relevant to Biomarker Development (e.g. GCLP, ICH).
Benefits and Compensation
The salary for this position is expected to range between $85,400 and $158,600 per year. The final salary offered is determined based on factors like, but not limited to, relevant skills and experience, and upon joining Novartis will be reviewed periodically. Novartis may change the published salary range based on company and market factors. Your compensation will include a performance‑based cash incentive and, depending on the level of the role, eligibility to be considered for annual equity awards.
