Job Description
Within RX, the Engineering department delivers excellence in software, data, and infrastructure engineering. It is responsible for building powerful, functional, beautiful, and secure scientific and IT software solutions that accelerate scientific research and deliver a fully integrated and frictionless user experience. The Engineering department is also responsible for providing engineering resources that create and maintain these software solutions in line with the priorities and roadmaps defined by the product teams and our business stakeholders.
Purpose of the Role:
As an Engineer within the Computational Science environment, you will assist the leadership team in defining, building, and supporting applications, workflows, and tools to advance computational drug discovery. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with external technology partners and various scientific and technical departments to develop solutions that align with the strategic objectives of both the product team and the scientific business partners.
Major accountabilities but not limited to:
Utilize your expertise in High Performance Computing (HPC) and drug discovery to transform strategic initiatives into products and solutions that enable scientists to address complex scientific inquiries.
- Support the development of application build workflows using tools such as Jenkins, EasyBuild, Ansible, and compilers for HPC environments.
- Collaborate in building hybrid HPCs, with on-premises and cloud capabilities.
- Optimize scientific application builds and implement automated testing.
- Collaborate with scientific users to enhance problematic workflows and cooperatively identify solutions.
- Profile applications within an HPC environment and provide optimization recommendations.
- Analyze and monitor the HPC environment to optimize workload distribution on the HPC cluster.
Minimum Requirements :
The ideal candidate is a rapid learner who excels at acquiring new skills and establishing connections and relationships. You are passionate about High Performance Computing and possess an intrinsic drive to enhance the quality, efficiency, and impact of scientific research through compute environment optimizations.
Additionally, you should bring many of the following competencies and be eager to develop the rest:
- Excellent understanding of Linux systems (RedHat).
- Experience with cloud compute services, preferably AWS.
- Experience with HPC clusters and workload managers such as Altair Grid Engine.
- Proficiency in developing workflows for application builds and testing.
- Experience with setting up CUDA, OpenMPI, TensorFlow, and PyTorch.
- Familiarity with cloud services and technologies.
- Knowledge of InfiniBand or other fast interconnect technologies.
- A plus: Understanding of drug development processes and workflows commonly encountered in biotech/pharma R&D environments.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Over 5 years of experience in an informatics environment, ideally within a drug discovery context.
Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $151,600 and $283,400 per year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/25 through 12/31/25, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
