A vacancy has arisen for a full time, permanent position based at the North Middlesex University Hospital, Rapid Response Laboratory. North Middlesex University Hospital is one of London's busiest acute hospitals, serving more than 350,000 people living in Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas. The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Service at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is provided by Health Services Laboratories (HSL), offering an essential 24/7 service to patients.
Main duties of the job include:
- Assisting in the daily operation in the Department of Pathology.
- Taking responsibility for staff teams of various grades, ensuring appropriate supervision of activities to meet service, operational and contractual KPIs.
- Having excellent knowledge of BSQR and experience of investigating SHOT SABRE events.
- Working closely with Senior Biomedical Scientists and other Heads of Department to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
- Managing a team of BMS, Associate Practitioners and MLAs to ensure a robust 24/7 service.

Job responsibilities include:
- Overseeing and participating in the routine processing of specimens and issuing blood components.
- Ensuring a robust rota is in place for 24/7 service.
- Maintaining scientific standards and quality assurance in all areas of the department.
- Establishing systems for timely investigations and turnaround times.
- Ensuring correct verification of results and appropriate diagnostic comments.
- Liaising with NHSBT reference laboratories and clinicians for specialist investigations.
- Ensuring compliance with GMP standards and legal regulations.
- Involvement in staff recruitment and conducting appraisals.
- Monitoring external quality control submission and compliance.
- Contributing to the maintenance and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Training and Education:
- Ensuring training documentation complies with CPA/UKAS, HCPC and IBMS regulations.
- Providing managerial support to the Training Manager.
- Undertaking teaching and competency assessments for new staff.
- Keeping abreast of current developments in the field.
Person Specification:
- Qualification in pathology disciplines consistent with HCPC requirements.
- MSc or equivalent experience in a relevant subject.
- Current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Demonstrated experience of working to a laboratory Quality Management System.
- Experience of supervising staff and conducting appraisals.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
Depending on experience, the salary is up to £72,055 per annum inclusive of regional pay allowance.
