A vacancy has arisen for a 12-month fixed term/secondment Senior Biomedical Scientist to join the multidisciplinary team at Ross Hall hospital, Glasgow. We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated BMS with appropriate qualifications including an MSc or equivalent experience; to join the senior team of the department. You will be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist and have a broad post-registration experience within a Blood Sciences laboratory. You will need significant experience at specialist BMS level; this experience must include health and safety, audits, appraisal and staff development and knowledge of UKAS accreditation and ISO15189:2022 standards.

We operate the following shift pattern:

  • Earlies 07.30-15.30 Mon-Fri
  • Lates 10.30-18.30 Mon-Fri (on-call from 18.30-07.30)

Weekend working on rotation is a requirement of the post. Participation in the out of hours on call rota will be required for which there is additional payments.

Main duties of the job

To manage staff and various sections within the Blood Sciences Department as directed by the Lead Biomedical Scientist, or Regional Manager, working in collaboration with the other senior scientific staff in providing an efficient and effective service within the resources available and to ensure the maintenance of scientific standards of TDL. The post holder will be required to work within any section of the department including core and unsocial hours as required.

Job responsibilities

To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties:

  • To supervise various grades of scientific & support staff
  • To participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in their regular review and update.
  • To participate in multidisciplinary working as required.
  • Techniques and testing relevant to the section
  • To communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals, providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct, recognising own boundaries.
  • To interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
  • Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types.
  • To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department.
  • To operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.
  • To evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
  • To interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system.
  • To check reports for further action by the Clinicians, and to authorise reports as delegated within TDL departmental policy.
  • To assist in the evaluation of new equipment and advise the head of service, senior scientific colleagues on the need for new equipment and maintenance of existing equipment.
  • To ensure that the department meets all the standards required by UKAS and to participate in the regular review of all the procedures performed in the laboratory including the establishment and monitoring of effective internal and external Quality Control and Quality Assurance schemes.

Person Specification

Experience

Theoretical and practical knowledge in discipline of pathology relevant to role. Previous experience in a relevant laboratory, and proficiency in techniques appropriate to the discipline.

Qualifications

BSc/MSc or equivalent IBMS Specialist/ACB Portfolio/FRC Path Registration with HCPC REGISTERED WITH THE IBMS OR ACB CPD SCHEME.
