Biomedical Scientist (Night Shift), Biochemistry Department – Ramsay Rivers Hospital, Hertfordshire

Full‑time / Permanent. Salary up to £66,582.10 per annum DOE inclusive of regional pay allowance and unsocial working hours allowance (for Night‑Shift).

About the Service

The Rivers Laboratory is based within Ramsay Rivers Hospital in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, and provides services to the host site and six additional hospitals, including two with blood transfusion services. The laboratory operates a 24/7 service and supports outpatient, surgical, and oncology services, working closely with hospital clinical teams.

About the Job

Applicants must have experience at band 6 or equivalent, blood transfusion experience is essential, and be able to work as part of the laboratory team, maintaining a safe, high‑quality diagnostic service during all shifts. HCPC registration number must be included on the CV. Candidates must be able to work days, nights, and weekends without restriction.

Key duties include:

  • Receipt, booking, and processing of patient samples
  • Performance and monitoring of internal quality control (IQC) and participation in external quality assessment (EQA)
  • Authorisation and reporting of laboratory results in line with departmental protocols
  • Troubleshooting instrumentation and resolving analytical issues
  • Completion of operational and quality‑related documentation
  • Reporting and investigation of incidents in accordance with governance procedures
  • Supporting stock control and reagent management
  • Issuing blood components

Working Arrangements

  • Mon‑Fri include early, core days and lates
  • Nights mostly covered by dedicated night staff but cover required
  • Weekend and out‑of‑hours shifts with enhanced rates and overtime

Training and Development

  • Participation in internal training and competency assessment programmes
