Sonic Healthcare UK encompasses the two main entities in the UK, The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) and Health Services Laboratories (HSL). HSL is a partnership between The Doctors Laboratory (TDL), Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). HSL was formed to provide pathology services to the NHS Trusts and has expanded further to provide services to other NHS Trusts.

About the role: An opportunity exists for a Full Time, Permanent, HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist wishing to work within the Blood Transfusion Establishment at 60 Whitfield St. It is one of the busiest and most challenging/complex Hospital Blood Transfusion services in the country. The blood Transfusion department is a blood establishment with a varied workload from University College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust which includes sites such as the Macmillan Cancer Centre and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the recent Grafton Way Building. The BT service also supports the TTP plasma exchange service as it is National referral centre for these patients. In addition Transfusion service is provided for Red cell exchange and Thalassemia Major patients in Red cell/Day care unit as well as Bone Marrow Transplantation unit. There is also a busy BT antenatal patient monitoring service with a foetal medicine unit. The complexity of serology and challenges of blood provision provides a thriving challenge for staff, who will be involved with providing a high standard of patient care in terms of blood provision. There are also opportunities for staff to participate in a well accomplished quality system embedded within the BT department with plenty of opportunities to gain new skills.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to participate in some shifts to support the needs of the 24/7 requirements of the service as allocated by the Head of Blood Transfusion Laboratories. The ideal candidate will contribute to providing a professional and technical laboratory service working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department and to work independently performing routine analyses with support as required from senior Biomedical Scientists. Opportunities for staff to participate in a well accomplished quality system embedded within the BT department with plenty of opportunities to gain new skills.

Qualifications: HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist. Routine analyses experience. Ability to work independently in a high standard of patient care. Experience in blood transfusion service or complex hospital BT service is desirable.
