About the Role

As a Consultant Neurologist, you willprovide specialist neurological assessment and management within a regionalsecondary care service. The role is primarily outpatient-focused, withneurologists conducting regular outpatient clinics and contributing toinpatient consultative care when required.

Inpatient neurology patients are admittedunder General Medicine and remain under General Medicine for the duration oftheir admission. Neurologists provide specialist advice, with managementimplemented by the admitting general physicians. As such, Neurologist may berequired to review inpatients and offer consultative recommendations ratherthan assume primary responsibility

for care.

The position offers a varied andrewarding caseload across a broad range of neurological conditions, withopportunities to contribute to service development, multidisciplinarycollaboration, and clinical education.

About theTeam/Service/ Location

The Nelson Marlborough Neurology Service is a secondarycare service providing specialist neurological assessment and managementpredominantly in the outpatient setting.

The service operates across two hospital sites:

  • NelsonHospital, serving a population of approximately 100,000
  • WairauHospital, serving a population of approximately 50,000

Patients requiring tertiary-level neurological care aretransferred to tertiary centres as appropriate. Our General Medicine colleaguesare highly experienced and manage a wide range of complex neurologicalpresentations locally, enabling neurologists to focus on specialist assessment,diagnostic expertise, and treatment planning.

You will join a collaborative and supportivemultidisciplinary environment working closely with:

  • SpecialistNurses
  • AlliedHealth professionals
  • Diagnosticservices including radiology and neurophysiology

The Neurology Service works closely with General Medicineteams across both hospital sites to ensure integrated and high-quality care forpatients with neurological conditions across the region.

About you

The ideal applicant will:

  • HoldFellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) orequivalent
  • Be eligible for an AnnualPractising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine with theMedical Council of New Zealand.
  • Have broad Neurology skillsand knowledge of the unique demands in a provincial hospital.
  • Be a highly skilleddiagnostician who is a great team player with excellent communicationskills.
  • Haveneurophysiology skills or experience (such as EMG or nerve conductionstudies), which would be appreciated and considered an advantage.
