The predicted salary is between 30000 - 40000 £ per year.

The Financial Analyst will contribute to the preparation of financial management information including accurate R&D budgets, monthly income and expenditure reports and financial forecasts. The role supports the Senior Financial Analyst and R&D Finance Manager by reviewing budget reports, analysing variances from plan, and ensuring action on required changes is taken. The post-holder will provide analysis to Research Leads and help them interpret finance reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • To generate and maintain R&D budget reports and other spreadsheet‑based reports in accordance with agreed timetables and department policies and procedures.
  • To review R&D budget reports, investigate significant variances by interrogating the financial ledger sub‑systems, summarise findings in spreadsheets and other forms for use by the Research Finance Manager and other finance staff.
  • To prepare costing spreadsheets for budget setting and for financial planning.
  • To meet regularly with budget holders and provide information and analysis to them, resolving queries regarding financial management matters with minimal supervision.
  • To facilitate the flow of information between researchers and other departments within Finance.
  • To assist with the production of external service agreements and internal recharge agreements to facilitate the development of new R&D initiatives, including the Comprehensive Research Network.
  • To explain relevant regulations from the Trusts Standing Financial Instructions to individual members of staff.
  • To recommend improvements and changes to local working practices.
  • To comply with the Data Protection Act in relation to the confidentiality of personal information and patient confidentiality.
  • To undertake any other duties as required, consistent with the grade and nature of the post.

  • Internal: R&D Office Staff, Regional Research Delivery Network Budget Holders, Trust Researchers, Research leads & Research Managers, Finance Staff at all levels of the organisation, HR Staff.
  • External: KCL Researchers, Finance staff at the Medical School, Finance staff at other NHS bodies, National Institute of Health Research, Other grant giving bodies.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Essential: Relevant work experience in finance, research or academic research.
  • Desirable: Experience working in an accounting department; knowledge and experience of working with grant applications and research contracts.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Relevant degree or professional qualification or equivalent experience.

Skills

  • Essential: Ability to interpret complex guidance and written research documentation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to explain finance concepts to non‑finance staff. Strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Excel. Rigorous attention to detail.
  • Desirable: Understanding of costing methodologies, including salary estimates.
