Job Overview

At North Tees & Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust senior finance lead role within University Hospitals Tees' Managing Director portfolio, supporting long‑term financial sustainability, major transformation programmes, PFI and commercial workstreams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive financial leadership to the financial sustainability agenda, including medium and long‑term planning, recovery and delivery of financial trajectories.
  • Lead financial leadership for transformation programmes and service reconfiguration projects, ensuring robust financial appraisal, affordability, phasing of benefits and ongoing delivery assurance.
  • Work autonomously under the direction of the Director of Assurance & Deputy Managing Director, providing expert advice for strategic decision‑making and organisational change.
  • Embed financial sustainability considerations into PFI, commercial, contract management and transformation decisions.
  • Challenge UHT senior leaders to identify, develop and deliver productivity, efficiency and value‑for‑money opportunities.
  • Maintain strong financial governance, control and assurance across sustainability and transformation workstreams.
  • Manage business‑as‑usual contract management arrangements, pricing, agreement and financial monitoring under PFI contracts, and support handback processes.
  • Provide commercial financial input on major contracts/projects, robust financial data for performance management, business case development and other proposals.
  • Advise on strategic and operational decision‑making through evidence gathering and analysis.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria – Qualifications

  • Qualified with relevant finance experience; CCAB qualified accountant with experience at managerial level within a complex finance department or NHS financial experience at Senior Manager level.
  • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development.

Desirable Criteria – Qualifications

  • Experience within the NHS.

Essential Criteria – Experience

  • Managing finances for a highly complex NHS or comparable service, understanding cost drivers and demand impacts (e.g., emergency activity).
  • Experience of system implementation and change management.
  • Evidence of leadership, direction and supervision skills and ability to motivate and manage staff.
  • Experience dealing with highly complex and/or sensitive information and unpredictable situations.

Desirable Criteria – Experience

  • Experience in the NHS at a managerial level.

Essential Criteria – Skills, Aptitude & Knowledge

  • Comprehensive knowledge of national, regional and local financial reporting processes and systems, manual and computerised.
  • Team player able to contribute effectively to shared objectives.
  • Ability to work independently, interpreting financial guidance, accounting policies and standards.
  • Detailed knowledge of NHS financial regimes, reporting requirements and accounting policies; understanding of HR policies relating to employee management.

Desirable Criteria – Skills, Aptitude & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of HR policies and procedures relating to employee management.
