Overview
As a Senior Statistical Officer you will provide operational statistical support across HSE, with a particular focus initially on the Building Safety Division (BSD). Your work will help ensure HSE continues to protect people by preventing death, injury and ill health in Great Britain’s workplaces, while supporting the day-to-day delivery of BSD’s objectives. You will be part of an analytical team working alongside health and safety and building safety specialists, producing clear and reliable evidence to support effective decision-making. You will help maintain good practice in line with the principles of the Statistics Code of Practice. Part-time working hours are available for this role, with a minimum commitment of 30 hours per week. Occasional travel to the Bootle office will be required for monthly team meetings.
Responsibilities
- Create new data solutions/collections through the manipulation of multiple data sources to better meet customer needs.
- Proactively engage early and often with the customer to share analytical results and discuss findings, taking data limitations into account.
- Influence the debate and the decision-making process to ensure that robust data collection is facilitated.
- Drive forward suitable technologies, tools and analytical techniques, leading the way in their application and acting as a main point of contact to ensure effective delivery within, and across teams.
- Use the most appropriate methods and tools to deliver analysis and confidently adapt approaches to effectively manipulate a variety of data sources.
- Take responsibility for the delivery of high-quality statistical advice and analysis.

Qualifications and experience
- Proven leadership capability and experience managing a team and prioritising tasks in line with organisational aims.
- Analytical experience with practical application of analysis or research and knowledge of data sources.
- Experience of managing the delivery of complex projects and delivering quality outcomes to meet customer demands.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex analysis to non-specialists and to engage with ministers, senior officials and external stakeholders.
- Ability to deliver high-impact analysis to tight deadlines, with forward planning to identify risks and issues.
- A first- or second-class honours degree (2:2 or above) in a numerate subject containing taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Psychology, Geography).
Apprenticeships
- Level 6 Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship, or
- Level 4 Data Analytics Apprenticeship with CPD logbook signed off by a GSG manager/mentor covering two years in government statistics/data analysis.
Experience route
- Alternative route for applicants with two years of statistical/data science experience, evidencing application at level equivalent to a foundation degree or HND (level five) per the GSG Competency framework.
