I’m recruiting on behalf of a growing engineering manufacturer in Stockport, specialising in the design and build of high-precision inspection and simulation machinery. Due to business growth and an increase in international projects, they are looking to appoint an experienced Service & Installation Engineer to take on a technically advanced, customer-facing and hands-on role.

Working closely with the Project Lead – ideal for someone who can combine strong practical engineering ability with problem-solving and customer interaction.

Key Responsibilities – Service & Installation Engineer
  • Electrical and mechanical installation of equipment across UK and international client sites (primarily the USA).
  • Perform fault-finding and troubleshooting on electrical, mechanical and software-related issues (with support from the software team).
  • Read and interpret CAD drawings, wiring schematics and engineering diagrams to ensure accurate installations.
  • Act as the technical point of contact on-site, leading service interventions and managing small project teams where required.
  • Monitor machine/system performance, complete service audits and ensure long-term reliability.
  • Identify potential problems, implement corrective actions and suggest system improvements.
  • Support and mentor junior engineers.
  • When not travelling, support mechanical build, electrical wiring and system assembly in the Stockport facility.
  • Carry out pre-delivery inspections, testing, upgrades and modifications before dispatch to clients.
  • Work closely with design, software and control engineering teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain detailed service reports, commissioning records, system configurations and maintenance logs.
  • Ensure all work adheres to company standards, site-specific health and safety procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Complete quality assurance checks, risk assessments and client sign-off documentation.
  • Build strong relationships with customers, providing clear communication, updates and post-service support.
  • Explain system functionality, train customer staff on usage and escalate any complex issues to relevant internal teams.
  • Collaborate with design, software and product development teams to feed back real-world issues and improvements.
Person Specification – Senior Service & Installation EngineerEssential:
  • Proven track record as a Service & Installation Engineer, Service Engineer, Maintenance Engineer or similar.
  • Strong hands-on electrical or mechanical skills, ideally both.
  • Confident in electrical wiring, panel work, mechanical assembly and fault-finding.
  • Experience commissioning or installing machinery or automation systems (OT/DCS knowledge advantageous).
  • Able to interpret technical drawings, wiring schematics and CAD layouts.
  • Full UK driving licence and valid passport.
  • Able and willing to travel internationally (approx. 3–4 times per year to the USA, typically 1–2 weeks per trip).
  • No known restrictions that would prevent obtaining a US visa.
Desirable:
  • Experience working with machinery in industries such as robotics, inspection systems, automotive or mechatronics.
  • Leadership, mentoring or supervisory experience.
  • CAD literacy or understanding of industrial software/controls.
Benefits & Working Structure
  • Based in Stockport – minimum of 3 days per week on-site when not travelling.
  • 37.5-hour week with flexible start times (core hours by 9:30am).
  • 20 days holiday + bank holidays + birthday off, with option to buy up to 5 additional days.
  • Annual discretionary bonus.
  • Pension scheme.
  • Company credit card for travel expenses, plus overtime or time off in lieu for weekend/extended travel.
