Our client in Erith, Kent is looking for a customs clerk, or ideally an operations clerk who has customs experience.
Job Purpose
The Customs Clerk is responsible for preparing, processing, and submitting customs documentation to ensure the efficient clearance of import and export shipments. The role requires strong knowledge of customs regulations and hands-on experience within freight operations to support timely cargo movement and compliance with all statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and process customs declarations for imports and exports in accordance with local and international regulations.
- Classify goods using the correct Harmonized System (HS) codes and ensure accurate tariff application.
- Liaise with clients, freight forwarders, and internal teams to facilitate smooth clearance.
- Verify shipping documents including commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and licences.
- Calculate fees and other applicable charges.
- Monitor shipment status and resolve clearance issues or delays.
- Ensure compliance with customs laws, trade regulations, and company policies.
- Maintain accurate records and filing systems for audit and compliance purposes.
- Support freight operations by coordinating with warehouse, transport, and operations teams.
