What if your next GP job came with a completely different way of life?
Imagine finishing surgery and being minutes from a wild coastline. Swapping the daily commute for a walk along the beach. Knowing your patients, becoming part of a close-knit community, and having the time and space to enjoy life outside medicine.
Whether you choose the vibrant community of Lerwick or the spectacular North Mainland around Brae, you'll become part of a supportive multidisciplinary team where GPs are valued and encouraged to develop.
Across their practices, you'll have access to colleagues including:
- Advanced Nurse Practitioners
- Practice Nurses and Healthcare Support Workers
- Pharmacists and Primary Care Pharmacy teams
- Physiotherapists
- Community Link Workers
- Community Nursing teams
- Community Mental Health teams
- Practice and administrative teams
There are regular MDT meetings, palliative care meetings and opportunities to work collaboratively across services.
They supportspecial interests you'd like to develop, and there are also opportunities to become involved in out-of-hours care if that interests you.
At Lerwick GP Practice, learning and development are genuinely part of the working week, with one afternoon dedicated to clinical learning and governance. The practice is also a training and retainer practice.
At Brae Health Centre, you'll serve a close-knit community of around 2,400 people, working alongside a dedicated team in a non-dispensing practice. The health centre also houses a pharmacy, with excellent support from the Primary Care Pharmacy team.
Both practices offer the opportunity to build relationships with patients and colleagues in a way that can be difficult to achieve in larger, more pressured environments.
Why move to Shetland?? ...
Shetland is home to around 23,000 people, spread across an extraordinary collection of islands where dramatic coastlines, beaches, wildlife and open landscapes are part of everyday life.
But this isn't simply a beautiful place to visit.
It's a place where people live, work, raise families, pursue hobbies and build communities.
You'll find:
Wildlife on your doorstep.
Seals, otters, seabirds and ponies are all part of the Shetland landscape, while the islands are famous for their incredible birdlife and marine environment.
The outdoors built into everyday life.
Walking, cycling, sailing, kayaking, rowing, boating and exploring the coastline can all become part of your normal week.
A genuinely connected community.
Shetland has a strong community spirit, with local groups, clubs, community halls and events bringing people together across the islands.
Great facilities.
There are eight leisure centres, excellent schools, harbours, sporting facilities and the Mareel cinema and arts venue in Lerwick.
A thriving culture.
Shetland has a rich Norse and Scottish heritage alongside a vibrant contemporary arts, music and creative scene.
And if you have children, Shetland offers something increasingly precious: space, freedom and a safe environment in which to grow up, alongside highly regarded schools and excellent opportunities to get involved in sport and community life.
A different kind of work-life balance
Perhaps you're tired of the commute.
Perhaps you're looking for somewhere your children can grow up with more freedom.
Perhaps you want to spend your weekends outdoors rather than sitting in traffic.
Perhaps you simply want to slow things down without slowing your career down.
Shetland offers the chance to do exactly that.
The Lerwick practice is also committed to sustainability, including nature prescribing and a fully electric fleet of vehicles for home visits - including a much-loved electric bike.
And although Shetland feels a world away from the pressures of mainland life, it remains only a short flight from the UK mainland.
