As part of HDR’s Building Engineering Services Group, you’ll help design the critical infrastructure that supports the digital age and shapes the spaces where people work, connect, and thrive.

As a Graduate Structural Engineer, you will have the opportunity to assist senior engineers and the wider team in the design process in order to gain a detailed working knowledge of all parts of the industry. You will carry out detailed design and calculations in accordance with industry guides, assist and prepare specifications, reports, and drawings to the design programme, and oversee project site works snagging and testing as directed by your line manager or group lead.

We are looking for someone who is a personable self-starter with the ability to project a positive ‘can do’ professional attitude at all times while maintaining good working relationships. You should enjoy working collaboratively across disciplines, establish excellent working rapport within the team, business, and with clients, and be able to work under pressure, handle a varied workload, and keep to tight deadlines whilst maintaining the highest level of technical excellence.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist Senior Engineers with detailed design tasks and drawing production.
  • Develop an understanding of the different building materials and techniques employed in design.
  • Carry out detailed design calculations and develop a full understanding of computer design packages.
  • Maintain a Continuing Professional Development diary to assist in obtaining appropriate qualifications.
  • Develop an understanding of appropriate Legislation Standards, Building Regulations, and Codes of Practice.
  • Learn and understand design techniques and develop awareness of other design disciplines.
  • Maintain a training log on a daily basis, recording achievements and experience.
  • Attend appropriate and relevant site visits and meetings as applicable to the role or the project.
  • Attend relevant training as required by the practice to achieve Chartered status.
  • Attend and arrange lunchtime CPD’s and Knowledge Sharing sessions.
  • Assist in maintaining QA systems on projects.
Requirements:
  • Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or relevant subject.
  • Good IT knowledge and experience featuring Microsoft Packages.
  • Personable and a ‘can do’ attitude with resource management experience.
  • Clear, concise, professional, and personable communication with clients, colleagues, and suppliers.
  • Some knowledge and use of appropriate design analysis software desirable.
  • Able to establish rapport and good working relationships within the project team and clients.
  • Ability to work as part of a team collaboratively and cooperatively.
