In the role of Senior Traffic Engineer, you will play a key technical and leadership role in the planning, design, and delivery of complex transportation projects. The position leads the planning, design and delivery of traffic and highway engineering projects in the UK and supporting similar projects in the US, Canada and Middle East.
Responsibilities- Provide senior-level technical leadership and design oversight for the preparation and review of traffic and transportation design deliverables.
- Oversee and review traffic modelling, simulation, and analytical studies using industry-standard tools, ensuring technical accuracy and clear documentation of assumptions, methodologies, and results.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and recognised authority in traffic engineering, proactively identifying and resolving complex technical issues and contributing innovative solutions to projects with broad scope, high visibility, or significant organisational impact.
- Plan, assign, organise, and supervise the work of teams of engineers, designers, and technicians, including mentoring junior staff, conducting technical reviews, and supporting professional development.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, including roadway, structural, civil, environmental, and construction professionals, to ensure integrated and well-coordinated project delivery.
- Support project planning and delivery activities, including scope definition, schedule development, budget oversight, and risk management, and serve as Project Manager when required.
- Engage with clients, agencies, and stakeholders by participating in meetings, presentations, and technical discussions, clearly communicating technical concepts and project recommendations.
- Contribute to proposal and fee development, technical approaches and work plans, and support business development efforts by providing technical expertise and project experience.
- Assist in the development and growth of the HDR UK Transportation business.
- Perform other duties as required to support project objectives and organisational needs.
- Chartered Engineer Status a plus.
- Knowledge of software packages used in the US such as HCS and CORSIM, is a plus.
- Preference given to candidates with project experience in the UK, Middle East, and North America.
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant traffic engineering experience.
- A civil engineering or transport engineering degree.
- Member of relevant professional body.
- Knowledge of appropriate design standards, legislation and guidance including Local Transport Notes (LTNs), Traffic Signs Manual, MfS, MfS 2, DMRB and CDM 2015.
- Experience using software packages such as Junction 10, LinSig, VISSIM, PARAMICS, SATURN.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, deliver presentations, and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to active participation in an employee-owned company culture.
