As an Electrical Power Engineer, you will contribute to transforming power infrastructure and have opportunities to grow and innovate. Our Glasgow office is the UK power hub and operates like an innovative startup within HDR's global presence. You’ll be part of a small, rapidly growing team with the opportunity to influence local operations in a supportive and entrepreneurial environment, backed by HDR’s 600+ person power team in the US for resources and collaboration. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to support the development of detailed designs and specifications for a diverse range of projects. You will work under the guidance of Associate and Senior engineers to gain hands-on experience across the project lifecycle. Responsibilities

  • Support the design and engineering of high-voltage substation and power delivery projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • Assist in preparing technical documentation including reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, and protection engineers to integrate solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews, quality checks, and client meetings with the support of senior staff.
  • Help interpret and apply relevant design codes, standards, and client specifications (e.g. IEC, IEEE, ANSI).
  • Engage in internal learning opportunities to develop technical expertise and progress toward chartership.
  • Promote safe design practices and support compliance with CDM regulations and ISO quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (required); MEng or MSc is essential.
  • Working toward or interest in obtaining Chartered status.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in electrical design, ideally in high-voltage substations or switchyard projects.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems design, including one-line diagrams, cable sizing, earthing, and protection schemes.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI) and design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP, DigSILENT or similar) is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with a proactive and positive attitude.
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
