In this role you will lead electrical design for HDR's Building Engineering Services, focusing on mission-critical datacentre projects. You will oversee design from concept to completion, manage budgets and resources, and coach a high-performing team. You’ll maintain strong client relationships and ensure quality across all work. Responsibilities
- Monitor project resources and monthly budgets; define CAD needs and short-term workload forecasts.
- Lead design from concept through detailed design, tender, site supervision, and completion with regular design reviews.
- Ensure all designs and reports meet technical standards and quality; maintain in-house design checks.
- Oversee contract staff or third-party appointments; nurture client relationships for satisfaction and repeat business.
- Develop new business opportunities and participate in company presentations.
- Motivate and manage staff, set objectives, and coach for potential.
- Monitor project progress, design changes, and financial budgets.
- Implement QA systems, health and safety, and CDM compliance; ensure ISO 9001/14001 adherence.
- Coordinate timesheets, expenses, and leave; support staff development and CPD.
- Report performance issues and implement corrective actions with divisional leadership.
Key requirements
- Minimum 7 years experience in designing and managing mission-critical datacentre projects.
- Excellent presentation and communication skills.
- Experience monitoring contract staff or third-party appointments.
- Ability to model and produce CAD drawings; effective liaison with other consultants.
- Project management experience with limited supervision.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Degree level or equivalent; ideally Chartered Engineer.
- Ability to build rapport within project teams and with Clients.
- Experience with industry design software (Amtech, Dialux, Revit, Bluebeam) and mentoring juniors.
- On-site project monitoring, contractor coordination, and witnessing testing/commissioning.
- Leadership and people management experience; team-oriented and collaborative.
