The Commercial Assistant will provide day-to-day support to the Quantity Surveying and Commercial team on water industry projects. The role is focused on learning the fundamentals of cost control, commercial administration, and contract processes while assisting with basic reporting and record-keeping. This position is ideal for someone starting their career in quantity surveying or commercial management who is keen to learn and develop within the utilities and infrastructure sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Commercial Support
- Assist with basic cost tracking and data entry
- Support the preparation of simple cost reports and spreadsheets
- Help maintain accurate commercial records and project documentation
- Assist the Quantity Surveyor with day-to-day commercial tasks
- Applications & Payments
- Support the preparation of payment applications
- Assist in checking subcontractor invoices and applications
- Help maintain payment and cost records
- Contract & Administration
- Assist with contract administration tasks under supervision
- Help track variations and changes
- Support document control and filing of commercial correspondence
- Procurement Support
- Assist with raising purchase orders and subcontract documentation
- Support tender enquiries and price comparisons
- Help maintain supplier and subcontractor information
- Team & Site Support
- Work closely with project managers and site teams
- Attend site meetings where required to gain project exposure
- Support general commercial administration across projects
Skills & Experience
- Essential
- Interest in quantity surveying, commercial management, or construction
- Good numerical skills and attention to detail
- Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Excel
- Willingness to learn and take instruction
- Good communication and organisational skills
- UK driving license is required
- Desirable
- Some experience in construction or utilities
- Awareness of the water industry or infrastructure projects
- Studying towards (or interest in studying towards) a relevant qualification
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree to level 2:1 (Upper Second-Class Honours degree) or higher is desirable but not essential.
