Are you an experienced Phlebotomist who enjoys working independently and providing compassionate care to patients?We’re looking for a Band 2 Community Phlebotomist to join our Community Nursing team, based at Sheppey Community Hospital.You’ll spend much of your working day out in the community, visiting patients within their own homes to obtain blood samples following referrals from Community Nursing teams and GPs.For some patients, accessing traditional healthcare settings can be challenging, so the care you provide within their home can make a real difference. You’ll need to combine excellent phlebotomy skills with a calm, compassionate and professional approach, making patients feel comfortable and reassured throughout their appointment.You'll organize your workload, travel between patients and carry out venipuncture independently, while knowing when something needs to be escalated to a senior colleague or GP.If you’re an experienced Phlebotomist looking for greater independence and the variety that comes with community-based working, we’d love to hear from you.A full UK driving license and access to a car during the working day are essential for this community-based position.

Main Responsibilities

As a Community Phlebotomist, you will:

  • Visit patients within their own homes to undertake venipuncture and obtain blood samples
  • Provide a professional, compassionate and reassuring experience for patients
  • Accurately identify patients and ensure blood samples are correctly labelled and handled
  • Organise and manage your daily workload, travelling efficiently between community appointments
  • Carry out phlebotomy independently and within your agreed level of competence
  • Recognise problems or concerns and promptly seek advice from the appropriate senior colleague or GP
  • Maintain accurate, clear and timely patient records
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and dignity at all times
  • Follow appropriate infection prevention, health and safety and clinical procedures
  • Recognise and report incidents, risks and concerns appropriately
  • Work closely with Community Nursing teams, GPs and other colleagues to support safe and effective patient care
  • Participate in clinical supervision, mandatory training and ongoing development
  • Contribute to the continued development and improvement of the Community Nursing service

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll be an experienced and confident Phlebotomist who is comfortable working independently within the community.As you’ll be visiting patients in their own homes, you’ll need excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to put people at ease. You’ll be organized, reliable and able to manage your own workload without direct supervision while recognizing when you need to seek advice or elevate a concern.You will have:

  • NVQ Level 2 or an equivalent relevant qualification
  • Previous phlebotomy experience
  • Practical and theoretical venipuncture training and assessment
  • The ability to undertake phlebotomy independently
  • Previous experience working within the community
  • Previous health or social care experience
  • Experience dealing with members of the public face to face
  • Excellent communication skills and a compassionate approach to patients and carers
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider team
  • Good organization and workload-management skills
  • Competent IT skills and the ability to maintain electronic records
  • The ability to recognize important or urgent information and promptly seek advice or escalated this appropriately
  • An interest in Community Nursing and delivering care closer to home
  • A full UK driving license and access to a car during the working day are essential, as you'll need to travel efficiently between patients across the local area.
