Overview
As a School health support worker you\’ll be working closely with our friendly and dedicated School Nurses, following our policies and procedures, to help deliver the Healthy Child Programme (5-19). Together, we\’ll support schools, families, and children/young people, helping them to grow, learn, and thrive. As part of Wiltshire Children\’s Community Services, you\’ll work both within our team and across partner organisations, building positive relationships and making a real difference in the community.
Your role will include:
- Carrying out vision, hearing, and growth checks for children starting school
- Supporting the National Child Measurement Programme
- Delivering engaging health promotion activities and interventions for pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
Responsibilities
- Carry out growth, vision, and hearing screening for eligible pupils following national and local guidance, and be confident using LogMAR vision and audiology tests
- Contribute to the National Child Measurement Programme, working closely with schools to ensure smooth delivery
- Work independently in school settings, following School Health Nursing standards, while maintaining positive relationships with staff and encouraging participation in screening programmes
- Manage your own workload, keep accurate records, maintain equipment, and submit data on time
- Deliver health promotion activities and small-group interventions as directed by School Nurses, and support the wider School Nursing Team when needed
- Use IT systems to record activity, communicate with colleagues and partner agencies, and ensure resources are used efficiently
- Keep safeguarding central to your work and stay up to date through training, meetings, and supervision
- Welcome student observers to the role, adapt to changing needs in the service, and participate in team discussions and quality improvement
Safeguarding and protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults is of utmost importance; the role includes safer recruitment processes and relevant vetting checks.
Qualifications
- Part-time (22.5 hours per week), term-time only opportunity based in Chippenham and the surrounding rural areas
- Ability to drive to schools across the patch with a valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes
- Confident using LogMAR vision and audiology tests
- Experience or willingness to work in school settings and deliver health promotion activities
- Good IT skills to record activity and communicate with colleagues and partner agencies
- Commitment to safeguarding and continuous professional development
