A Sybase ASE Security Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining security controls to protect Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) database environments from unauthorized access, data breaches, and vulnerabilities. This specialist hardens database configurations, manages user roles and permissions, configures auditing, and ensures compliance with organizational and regional standards.
This role requires hands-on experience in all security-related support, tools, automation, and operational excellence, as well as SYBASE-TSQL / Unix scripting experience.
Key Responsibilities- Database Hardening & Configuration: Implementing security best practices, such as disabling unnecessary services, modifying default settings, and hardening Sybase ASE configurations.
- Access & Authorization Management: Managing user access rights, creating and managing roles/profiles, and implementing Segregation of Duties (SoD) to prevent unauthorized access.
- Security Auditing & Monitoring: Regularly reviewing audit logs, monitoring for unauthorized access, and conducting vulnerability assessments to identify potential security gaps.
- Data Protection & Encryption: Implementing data encryption techniques (e.g., encryption of sensitive data at rest or in transit) and data masking to comply with regulations.
- Incident Response & Troubleshooting: Identifying, analyzing, and mitigating security incidents, and addressing security-related issues within the database.
- Documentation & Compliance: Creating technical documentation, procedures, and reports for auditing and compliance purposes.
- Extensive experience with SAP/Sybase – 12.5 / 15 / 16
- Proven expertise with SAP/Sybase Replication Server 12.5/15/16
- Worked on implementation of security controls for Sybase Servers and Instances
- Audit/security expertise is a must including implementation of encryption/SSL.
- Shell scripting (bash or ksh) skills
- Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8
- Fluent spoken and written English
- Experience of integrating ASE 16 with external key management systems for full transparent data encryption (TDE)
