Theatre Practitioner – Anaesthetics
London, The Portland Hospital
Full time, 37.5 hours per week
Permanent contract
Salary: Competitive + Shift Allowance
Open to experienced Anaesthetic Practitioners and newly qualified ODPs
Shifts: Monday to Sunday, early, late and long day shifts. Participation in the on call and standby rota is required, including overnight on call commitments, home on call and weekend cover. Dedicated on call accommodation is available directly opposite the hospital.
Finding the right theatre role is about more than gaining experience. It's about joining a team where you'll be supported to develop your skills, grow your confidence and work alongside colleagues who are invested in your success. Whether you're an experienced Anaesthetic Practitioner looking to broaden your expertise within specialist services or a newly qualified Operating Department Practitioner preparing to begin your career, The Portland Hospital offers a supportive environment where learning, development and compassionate care sit at the heart of everything we do.
We’re looking for an Anaesthetics Practitioner to join our Theatre team at The Portland Hospital. As the only private hospital in the UK dedicated entirely to the healthcare of women and children, The Portland Hospital offers a unique opportunity to develop specialist experience across paediatric, maternity and women's health services. With more than 46 paediatric beds, a dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, neonatal intensive care services and over 175 paediatric consultants, you'll be part of a close knit clinical community where collaboration, recognition and professional growth are genuinely valued.
As an Anaesthetics Practitioner, you'll support both paediatric and adult patients across a varied and complex caseload.
We welcome applications from experienced Anaesthetic Practitioners, newly qualified Operating Department Practitioners awaiting HCPC registration and Registered Nurses who hold NMC registration and have successfully completed an Anaesthetic Course. Working across specialties including paediatric ENT, urology, cardiac, spinal, neuro, dental and maxillofacial surgery, alongside adult procedures and a busy maternity service, you'll gain exposure to a breadth of clinical practice rarely found within a single hospital. Surrounded by experienced practitioners, anaesthetists and multidisciplinary colleagues, you'll benefit from ongoing support, specialist learning opportunities and access to career development pathways designed to help you continue progressing.
A key part of this role is supporting our 24 hour maternity service and emergency theatre activity. Participation in the on-call and standby rota is an essential requirement and includes overnight on call commitments, home on call and weekend cover. You'll play an important role in supporting emergency Caesarean sections and urgent surgical activity where teamwork, responsiveness and excellent clinical care are critical. To support colleagues participating in the rota, a dedicated accommodation is available in a hospital owned flat directly opposite The Portland Hospital, providing a convenient and comfortable base when responding to emergency activity.
At HCA UK we care about what you care about. We care that you want to deliver the very best care. We care that you want a career you can be proud of. We care that you want working conditions that support your health and wellbeing. Let us care for you and your career, the same way you do for others.
What you’ll do:
- Deliver safe, high quality anaesthetic care across a wide range of paediatric, maternity and adult surgical procedures.
- Prepare, check and maintain anaesthetic equipment, drugs and theatre environments in line with clinical standards.
- Support anaesthetists throughout procedures, responding effectively to the needs of patients and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in the on call and standby rota, supporting emergency activity including Caesarean sections within the maternity service.
- Contribute to a positive learning environment focused on continuous improvement, patient safety and clinical excellence.
What you’ll bring:
- Current HCPC registration as an ODP, or due to obtain this
- Alternatively, current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse with a completed Anaesthetic Course.
- Previous anaesthetic theatre experience or successful completion of anaesthetic placements within a hospital setting as part of your training.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills within a multidisciplinary theatre environment.
- Commitment to delivering high standards of patient centred care.
