HC-One is developing a Specialist Dementia Care Community (SDCC) at Darnley Court care home. Darnley Court has provided care for people living with dementia for many years but following considerable investment in environmental layout and design, workforce and L&D in Carmichael community, we have exciting new opportunities available for those passionate about supporting people who are emotionally distressed by their dementia and require a specialist service to ensure their needs can be met appropriately.

As an SDCC, Carmichael will become a therapeutic care setting that demonstrates that quality of care and quality of life are of equal significance. It will provide a bespoke living environment embracing space and calming de‑scalation rooms, along with enhanced staffing and specialist training for Colleagues in positive approaches to behaviour, psychosocial therapies, de‑scalation interventions and safe restrictive practices. The therapeutic ambition will be that people will be understood as having needs to be met, rather than being defined by their condition.

About You

In your role as Deputy Dementia Services Lead, you will provide specialist dementia nursing expertise support to people with dementia, with a specific focus on distress and complex behaviours. This will include deputising for the Specialist Dementia Services Lead when/if they are absent from the Service. The position is deputy to the Specialist Dementia Services Lead, who will lead the SDCC, and hence this is a development role opportunity. HC-One Scotland will be supportive of post graduate education in dementia care, aspiring leader training programme etc.

The Deputy Dementia Services Lead will support, deliver, and coordinate person‑centred dementia care and therapeutic interventions in a residential setting to improve clinical outcomes for those living with dementia whose needs cause them to be distressed and their behaviours to negatively impact the lives of others. In line with NMC code of conduct and HC-One policies and procedures the post holder will provide:

  • Specialist behavioural assessment, functional analysis support and therapeutic interventions for people living with dementia and associated complex needs.
  • Ensure safe and effective nursing practice.
  • Facilitation of education, mentoring and supervision for staff in the delivery of evidence‑based dementia care and positive behavioural support interventions.
  • In conjunction with other relevant clinical staff the post holder will assist with clinical development in maintaining and improving all aspects of clinical governance, evidence‑based practice and quality assurance and monitoring within the service.
  • MDT working with other health and social care professionals.

Additionally:

  • Deliver relationship and family‑centred approaches to care, which meet the needs of people with dementia and family members.
  • As dementia progresses, support people with dementia, their families and care staff to understand and respond to changes in behaviour, ability, and relationships.
  • Ensure the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and that all legal requirements relating to The Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 are considered and adhered to in relation to all resident care.

For you this will mean taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field of person‑centred dementia care and positive behaviour support practices. You will be a Registered Nurse with an Active Pin on the NMC Register (RMN/RNMH/RGN/RNLD).

Role requirements:

  • Continue to develop skills and knowledge through further training.
  • Provide advice, consultation and mentoring to staff in the delivery of evidence‑based dementia care.
  • Act as a clinical role model to others, mentoring other staff as required.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues to provide support and information to families, including advanced care planning and best interest decisions.
  • Work with identified key stakeholders to develop more integrated care pathways and holistic models of care, through dissemination of specialist skills and knowledge.
  • Maintain clinical records and provide verbal and written feedback appropriately as required.
  • Ensure recorded information and data recorded is relevant, accurate and complete and captured in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all nursing practice is carried out in accordance with agreed policies and procedures of HC-One Scotland and the NMC Code.
  • Contribute to the delivery of the SDCC clinical OOH On‑Call rota.
  • To actively participate in practice development, clinical supervision and continuing professional development, maintaining professional registration and revalidation.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of evidence‑based recommendations on supporting people living with dementia, age‑related illnesses, and distress.
  • Be aware of current research related to dementia treatments/interventions and get involved in research where appropriate.
