This job will provide you with an opportunity to further your career alongside some of the best and most passionate technology experts from around the world in a leading company within the test, measurement and data analytics industry. You will be a strong contributor collaborating closely with colleagues from various business functions. At HBK, we live up to our three values: Be True, Own It and Aim High. We believe in absolute integrity – it’s how we win for stakeholders, the environment and each other. We believe in teamwork and keeping our promises – to ourselves and others. Finally, we believe in being bold and positive. This is how we perform at our best and achieve greater success.
About Us: Ling Dynamic Systems (LDS), part of HBK, is a global leader in vibration testing and measurement solutions. Our products and services support industries such as aerospace, automotive, defence, and electronics in ensuring quality, reliability, and synthesis. At HBK, innovation and precision drive everything we do.
Role Overview: As a Mechanical Project Engineer, you will join our dynamic engineering team in Royston, leading the end-to-end mechanical project engineering of LDS vibration test systems—from requirements capture and concept development through detailed design, build support, factory acceptance, and customer delivery—ensuring on-time, on-budget outcomes that meet stringent performance and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Engineering & Delivery: Own mechanical work-packages for LDS shaker systems, slip tables, fixtures and thermal barriers, coordinating with electrical/software engineering, manufacturing and supply chain. Develop project plans, schedules, risk registers, and progress reporting; drive issue resolution and change control to achieve scope, quality, cost and time objectives.
- Mechanical Design & Analysis: Produce and review 3D CAD models, assemblies and drawings (GD&T), BoMs and tolerance stacks for shaker structures, hydrostatic bearings, trunnions, cooling systems (air/water) and interfaces. Perform hand-calcs and FEA (modal/stress/fatigue) to validate stiffness, strength, dynamic performance, and safety factors under sine, random and shock environments typical of LDS systems.
- System Integration & Verification: Define mechanical acceptance criteria; plan and execute Factory Acceptance Testing including alignment, armature centering (optical/inductive), displacement checks and cooling performance; document results and non-conformances. Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for build/test issues; implement design for manufacture/assembly (DFMA) improvements.
- Stakeholder & Customer Interface: Collaborate with Sales/Applications to translate customer specifications into engineering requirements; prepare technical proposals, test plans and engineering change notes. Provide technical support to Field Service/Aftermarket on commissioning, preventative maintenance and upgrades of LDS equipment.
- Continuous Improvement & Sustainability: Champion value engineering, standardization of modules and continuous improvement initiatives aligned to HBK’s sustainability roadmap (e.g., thermal management efficiency, material selection, energy usage).
Qualifications / Experience
- Degree (BEng/MEng) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 5+ years mechanical project engineering in complex capital equipment or test systems (preferably vibration, aerospace, automotive, or industrial machinery).
- Proven experience with electromechanical systems (structures, bearings, cooling, fixtures) and exposure to hydraulics/pneumatics is advantageous for LDS systems.
- Competency in CAD (SolidWorks & AutoCad), FEA (Solidworks), and engineering calculation methods.
- Working knowledge of relevant standards and practices (e.g., vibration/shock test methods, DFMA, CE/UKCA, Machinery Directive, safety).
Key Skills & Attributes
- Strong mechanical design judgment and practical build/test sensibility for electrodynamic shakers and ancillary equipment.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and documentation skills (specs, test reports, ECNs).
- Analytical problem-solver with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Able to work hands-on in the factory/test lab and travel to customer sites when required.
- Knowledge and experience of quality procedures within an ISO9001 system.
- Knowledge of Environmental and Health and Safety standards ISO14001 & OHSAS18001 would be an advantage.
- Good understanding of mechanical principles with experience with industry-standard design practices such as DFMEA, DFA and DFM.
