HBK is looking for an Apprentice Materials Science Technologist for our Advanced Materials Characterisation and Testing Facility in Rotherham. This is an exciting role for someone with a keen interest in materials testing and fatigue behaviour. You will learn mechanical testing, maintain equipment, and assist with documentation for internal and commercial work—gaining exposure to the operational aspects of an operational testing facility.

By shadowing the materials test engineers and working alongside the technology team you will learn how to conduct mechanical testing and durability analysis for modern engineering materials. Your day-to-day job will include:

  • Assisting with mechanical testing: specimen inspection, test rig set-up, test monitoring, and data processing.
  • Conducting data analysis and reporting.
  • Helping with routine operations activities including: calibration, risk assessments, maintenance and H&S documentation.
  • Learning fixture design and manufacture using CAD and machine shop equipment.
  • Partaking in customer meetings and presenting at STEM events held within the company.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement activities and R&D projects.

Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs, including:
  • Maths at grade 6/B or above
  • English Language at grade 4/C or above
  • Science at grade 4/C or above
  • Two additional GCSEs at grade 4/C or above
  • 112 UCAS points, including:
    • At least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC national qualifications or T levels. This should include mathematics to A level and another STEM subject (ideally from physics, physical science, engineering science, computer science, technology, chemistry or another science or technology subject).
  • We may also consider applicants with equivalent qualifications and relevant work experience.
