Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant who knows that relationships come before learning?

We’re looking for a strong, resilient and experienced TA to join a specialist alternative provision supporting young people with additional needs, including SEMH and EHCPs.

This is a setting where there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Young people are supported through small-group learning, individualised support, mentoring and a relational, therapeutic approach designed around their needs, challenges and aspirations.

Previous experience working in Alternative Provision is essential.

You’ll be supporting young people who may have experienced significant barriers to education, so we need someone who is confident working with challenging behaviour, understands SEMH and knows how to build trust with young people who may not immediately engage.

The role will involve:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support in and around the classroom
  • Supporting young people with SEMH and additional needs
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with learners
  • Helping students regulate, re-engage and access education
  • Managing challenging behaviour calmly and consistently
  • Working closely with teachers, mentors and the wider support team
  • Supporting students with their personal development as well as their education
  • Encouraging independence, confidence and positive choices

The provision places a huge emphasis on knowing the young person behind the behaviour, providing consistency and giving students the time and support they need to make progress. Smaller class sizes and dedicated mentoring allow staff to build meaningful relationships and provide genuinely individualised support.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Experienced within Alternative Provision
  • Confident supporting young people with SEMH
  • Calm, patient and consistent
  • Resilient when faced with challenging behaviour
  • Able to build strong professional relationships
  • Adaptable and able to think on their feet
  • Passionate about helping young people who have struggled within traditional education

If you’re an experienced TA, Learning Mentor, Behaviour Support Worker or similar and you want a role where your relationships with young people genuinely matter, we want to hear from you.

Successful candidates must have:

  • An enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or be willing to obtain one
  • At least two professional references, including the most recent or current employer
  • The right to work in the UK
  • A good standard of literacy and numeracy, with excellent written and verbal communication skills

What Hazel Tree Education can offer you:

  • Competitive rates of pay – all pay rates quoted are inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay; rates are dependent on experience and teacher pay scale where applicable
  • A generous refer-a-friend or colleague bonus scheme
  • Pension contributions, subject to a qualifying period
  • Full compliance with the Agency Workers’ Regulations (AWR), ensuring fair pay and working conditions
  • In-house training developed and delivered by a qualified teacher, ensuring relevant and focused support
