A well-established packaging manufacturer is looking to appoint a Senior Maintenance Engineer to support its highly automated production operation. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced multi-skilled engineer to step into a senior-level shift engineering role within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining site performance, supporting engineering improvements, and assisting with the day-to-day coordination of engineering activities on shift.

The Role
Working within a busy engineering department, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving automated production and packaging equipment while acting as a senior point of support for the wider engineering team during shift operations. This is a highly hands-on role where you will be heavily involved in fault finding, breakdown response, and resolving complex engineering issues across the site. You will be expected to take the lead on more challenging technical problems, support root cause analysis activities, and assist the wider engineering team in driving long-term reliability improvements.
This role will suit a strong electrically biased engineer who enjoys fault finding, supporting others, and working within a fast-moving automated manufacturing environment where no two shifts are the same.
Key Responsibilities
- Responding to complex equipment breakdowns and carrying out effective fault diagnosis
- Acting as a senior engineering support during shift operations
- Assisting engineers with challenging technical and electrical faults
- Supporting root cause analysis and continuous improvement activities
- Completing planned preventative maintenance activities
- Fault finding on electrical and mechanical systems
- Supporting machinery upgrades, installations, and commissioning
- Supporting and mentoring junior engineers where required
- Working closely with production teams to maximise equipment uptime
- Maintaining accurate engineering and maintenance records
- Ensuring engineering work is completed safely and to a high standard
What We're Looking For
We are keen to speak with experienced engineers who have a strong background within FMCG, packaging, manufacturing, or automated production environments. The successful candidate will be technically strong, calm under pressure, and confident taking ownership of more complex engineering challenges during shift operations.
Ideal Background
- Time-served Multi-Skilled Engineer / Senior Engineer / Shift Engineer
- Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills
- Previous experience within FMCG, packaging, manufacturing, or process industries
- Apprentice trained, NVQ, City & Guilds, HNC, or equivalent engineering qualification
- Experience working with automated production or packaging machinery
- Strong understanding of PLC-controlled systems
- Siemens S7 PLC experience would be highly advantageous
- Knowledge of drives, motors, relays, sensors, conveyors, pumps, valves, and control systems
- Previous experience supporting or mentoring engineering teams would be beneficial
- Comfortable working within a fast-paced production environment
- Strong communication and problem-solving abilities
