Your new company Hays are working with a reputable business based in Shrewsbury who are looking to recruit a Materials Controller on a permanent basis. This role is responsible for managing and controlling the end‑to‑end flow of materials and finished goods within the business. Your role will include ensuring all goods received are inspected, accurately recorded in the ERP system, and stored appropriately. The role supports production by supplying materials, managing customer order dispatch, coordinating transport activities, and maintaining high levels of stock accuracy. The successful candidate will also supervise the Materials / Stores Operative and ensures all warehouse operations are safe, efficient, and compliant.
Your new role As a Materials Controller, your role will involve:
- Goods Inwards & ERP Management. Receive and inspect deliveries from suppliers, checking quantity and quality. Book all goods received, issued, transferred, and dispatched into the ERP system. Manage movement of goods to/from suppliers for third‑party processing. Maintain complete traceability of all stock movements.
- Production Support. Issue production orders and pick materials accurately. Ensure materials are supplied to production. Work closely with Production and Planning to prioritise material requirements.
- Customer Dispatch & Logistics. Pick, pack, and prepare customer orders for shipment. Arrange transport with approved carriers and couriers. Produce and manage all shipping and transport documentation. Monitor quality of incoming and outgoing parts. Quarantine and report non‑conforming or damaged materials.
- Stock Control. Organise and lead regular cycle counts and full stock checks. Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies. Ensure stock accuracy meets defined KPIs. Supervise, guide, and support the Materials / Stores Operative. Maintain high standards of performance and adherence to processes. Maintain, inspect, and report on warehouse equipment (e.g. forklift trucks, pallet trucks). Ensure safe storage, clear walkways, and compliance with racking/handling regulations. Maintain a clean, organised, and safe warehouse environment.
What you'll need to succeed: 3–5 years’ experience in materials control, stock control, or a similar warehouse-based role. Experience leading or mentoring others, even in an informal or small‑team environment. Confidence using ERP systems, with good understanding of stock transactions and data accuracy. Hands-on working style — comfortable being active in the warehouse, not a desk‑only role. Forklift experience (licence preferred; willingness to train acceptable). Aspiration to grow into a stronger leadership or supervisory position. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Strong commitment to quality, standards, and process compliance. Effective leadership and interpersonal skills. Strong organisational, time‑management, and planning abilities. Strong IT skills with confident ERP proficiency. Minimum 3 years’ experience in Materials Control, Stores Supervision, or Inventory Management within a manufacturing or distribution environment. Proven experience using ERP or stock management systems (e.g., SAP or equivalent). Experience picking and issuing materials to support production operations. Experience in stock control, cycle counting, and resolving stock discrepancies. Experience coordinating logistics and external transport providers. Understanding of relevant quality and health & safety standards. Valid driver’s licence (required). Forklift licence (desirable or willingness to obtain).
