Your new company

You will be joining a well-established public sector organisation that delivers Roads and Transportation services across the region. The Structures team plays a key role in assessing, maintaining and improving bridges and other highway structures that support the wider network. You will be part of a collaborative engineering environment where safety, quality and effective service delivery are at the heart of everything they do.

Your new role

  • Lead on the design of new works and improvements for bridges and highway structures
  • Manage general and principal inspections, condition assessments and maintenance activities
  • Oversee asset data management for all structures
  • Prepare surveys, designs, contracts and supervise works on site
  • Handle contract payments, variations, claims and disputes
  • Plan, prioritise and organise team workloads to meet timescales and budgets
  • Monitor and report project progress to the Design Engineering Manager
  • Develop solutions to a wide range of structural and design issues
  • Manage abnormal load routing
  • Ensure procurement follows council Standing Orders
  • Allocate work, identify resource gaps and support staff development
  • Lead on customer enquiries and complaints
  • Carry out recruitment, performance reviews, disciplinary matters and absence management
  • Lead regular team briefings
  • Act as Client and Principal Designer under CDM regulations
  • Ensure health and safety compliance across all activities
  • Represent Roads and Transportation at meetings and committees
  • Support and deputise for the Design Engineering Manager when required
  • Contribute to capital and revenue budget management
  • Prepare and present reports for internal and external groups
  • Contribute to corporate governance, compliance and performance
  • Lead on preparation and monitoring of the Service Asset Management Plan

What you'll need to succeed

  • Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council
  • Extensive experience in bridges and highway structures
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Proven project management experience
  • Working knowledge of contract management
  • Strong understanding of health and safety legislation
  • Full driving licence

Desirable

  • Degree in civil or structural engineering
  • Postgraduate qualification
  • Experience managing a team
  • IOSH Managing Safely or similar
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD or asset management software
  • Local government experience
  • Understanding of pavement construction over structures
