You will be working for a leading facilities management provider supporting the Ministry of Justice estate at HMP Highpoint. The organisation delivers essential maintenance services within a secure environment, with a strong focus on safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
As a Level 3 Electrician, you will be responsible for carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across the prison estate. This will include fault finding, repairs, installations, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems. You will work within a secure environment where duties will also involve supervising prisoners, escorting contractors, and adhering to strict security procedures. The role requires working in challenging environments such as confined spaces and at height, while ensuring all work is completed in line with health & safety regulations and industry standards.
You will be responsible for delivering both planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive works, including fault finding, breakdown repairs, and minor installation projects. This will involve testing and commissioning electrical systems in line with current regulations and industry best practice.
Working within a secure prison environment, you will:
- Supervise prisoners during maintenance activities, ensuring safe systems of work are followed at all times.
- Escort external contractors and monitor their activity in line with site security protocols (Local Security Strategy).
- Maintain strict tool control and stock management procedures.
The role also includes:
- Carrying out general building maintenance alongside electrical works where required.
- Working in challenging environments, including at height and in confined spaces.
- Supporting emergency and urgent repairs in line with service delivery timescales.
- Communicating effectively with colleagues and site teams via radio systems.
- Assisting with the management and ordering of materials to ensure stock levels are maintained.
You will also take an active role in site safety and compliance by:
- Adhering to all health & safety policies and statutory regulations.
- Supporting roles such as Fire Warden or First Aider (where required).
- Contributing to continuous improvement of site processes and service delivery.
This is a hands-on, varied role suited to someone who is technically strong, organised, and comfortable working within a structured and secure environment.
Details:
- Pay Frequency: Weekly
- Standard Hourly Rate: £24.28p/h including holiday
- Working Days: Monday to Friday
- Working Hours: 37 hours per week minimum
- The current standard working hours are between 8am and 4pm, but hours could change if deemed appropriate by the project or site manager.
What you'll need to succeed:
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services (or equivalent).
- 18th Edition (BS7671 Wiring Regulations).
- At least 2 years’ experience as a qualified electrician.
- Experience working on commercial or industrial systems (desirable).
- Knowledge of planned preventative maintenance (PPM).
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a secure and regulated environment.
- Good understanding of health & safety compliance.
Desirable:
- L8 Legionella Awareness (training can be provided).
You will need to be honest, hard-working, reliable, trustworthy and have great attention to detail, alongside being an excellent team player. All training will be provided for you on site when you start. Therefore, previous experience in the role is not necessary. All applicants who are interested in the position must pass Prison Clearance, which can take up to 8 weeks. Once passed, this is valid for 5 years and can be transferred to any other prisons of a similar category.
