An Interim Risk Officer is needed by a large City Council for a duration of 3-6 months, with a rate of circa £300 per day (UMB), though this is flexible depending on experience and current market conditions. The working pattern is hybrid, requiring 1-2 days per week on site.

This is a critical role supporting the Corporate Risk & Assurance function, helping to embed effective risk management across the organisation at both directorate and corporate level.

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Support delivery of an effective risk management service by engaging with officers across the Council.
  • Assist the Corporate Risk & Assurance Manager in embedding risk management activities, focusing on Directorate Risk Registers and contributions to the Corporate Risk Register.
  • Support the delivery of the Council's risk management strategy, frameworks, processes and working practices in line with best practice.
  • Provide risk management advice to officers and challenge appropriately to support informed decision-making.
  • Facilitate discussions to identify and assess risks, using agreed risk management documentation and standards.
  • Produce high-quality written reports following Directorate-level risk discussions.
  • Support the delivery of risk management training alongside internal teams or external providers.

Essential Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience working in a risk management role.
  • Strong understanding of risk management principles (operational and strategic).
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Confident user of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence and challenge senior officers constructively.
  • Experience working within a local authority or public sector environment is highly desirable.

Qualifications:

  • A recognised risk management qualification (e.g. IRM, APM, or similar) is preferred but not essential.
