A growing, independently owned Managing General Agent (MGA) is seeking a high-calibre Senior Underwriter to join its UK Casualty and Liability team. The business is entrepreneurially driven, technically focused and offers a clear commitment to long-term growth and internal progression. This is a strategic succession hire, offering a defined pathway into an Underwriting Manager role, as part of a wider, planned leadership transition.
As a Senior Underwriter, you will play a key role in underwriting casualty and liability risks while contributing to the long-term performance and development of the underwriting portfolio. You will work closely with senior underwriting leadership and gain exposure to portfolio management, strategy and decision-making. Some of your key responsibilities will include:
- Underwriting risks with a strong focus on profitable growth and sound technical judgement.
- Acting as a technical referral point for less experienced underwriters.
- Contributing to the development of underwriting capability by coaching and mentoring colleagues and supporting technical upskilling.
- Playing an active role in portfolio performance management, including reviewing loss ratios, monitoring risk mix and contributing to underwriting strategy.
- Undertaking technical audits and peer reviews to ensure underwriting quality, consistency and adherence to underwriting standards.
- Supporting claims-related underwriting decisions and contributing to feedback loops between underwriting and claims teams.
- Working closely with senior management to support the ongoing development of underwriting strategy and help shape underwriting standards as part of the wider succession plan.
In order to succeed in this role, you must have experience in underwriting casualty and liability risks with construction experience being highly desirable. Some exposure to property underwriting would be advantageous. You will be operating at a senior technical level and have demonstrable experience acting as a referral point, influencing underwriting decisions and supporting portfolio performance. You will have experience contributing to audits or peer reviews and be confident providing technical guidance to colleagues. You should combine strong commercial judgement with disciplined technical underwriting and will demonstrate either existing people management experience or clear leadership potential and ambition to step into a future leadership role. This role would suit a candidate that is career-focused, ambitious and motivated by progression alongside taking a collaborative and commercially minded approach. You should also be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced and independent environment and will demonstrate a genuine interest in the MGA model.
You will receive a competitive salary of 90,000, dependent on experience. You will benefit from a clearly defined succession plan into underwriting leadership, direct exposure to senior decision-makers and the opportunity to shape underwriting standards and culture within a technically driven business.
