The role:
Would you like to work in an infrastructure role where you can genuinely get hands-on across Windows, macOS, VMware, networking, storage and Linux, rather than being restricted to one narrow area? We're recruiting an Infrastructure Support Analyst to join our client, a leading scientific research institute in London. You'll join a small, highly collaborative IT team responsible for the infrastructure underpinning world-class scientific research. This is a broad 3rd-line infrastructure and projects role, combining BAU support with significant involvement in the development and improvement of the institute's technology estate.
You'll work across a varied environment comprising Windows and macOS endpoints, Windows and Linux servers, VMware virtualisation, Cisco networking, firewalls, storage and physical infrastructure. You'll take ownership of complex escalations while contributing to a substantial pipeline of infrastructure projects, including:
- VMware infrastructure upgrades and migrations
- Storage infrastructure
- Development of the macOS/Jamf environment
- Windows 11 estate upgrades
- Networking and security improvements
- Future high-performance computing infrastructure
This is a genuinely hands-on environment with on-premise servers, networking, storage, comms rooms and data-centre infrastructure, so it's particularly well suited to an engineer who enjoys understanding how the entire estate fits together.
What we're looking for:
You'll ideally have at least 3 years' experience working at 3rd-line/infrastructure level, with strong knowledge of Windows Server and traditional on-premise infrastructure. Experience in several of the following would be particularly valuable:
- Windows Server administration
- VMware
- macOS support
- Jamf or another Apple device-management platform
- Cisco networking
- Firewalls
- NAS/SAN and enterprise storage
- Linux administration
- Backup technologies
- Microsoft 365
- Physical server and network infrastructure
You do not need to tick every box. Strong Windows infrastructure experience combined with some macOS exposure is of particular interest, and there is scope to develop further skills in areas such as Linux. You'll need to be proactive, technically curious and comfortable taking ownership. As part of a lean infrastructure team, you'll have considerable exposure to projects and the opportunity to develop across technologies rather than being confined to a narrowly defined remit.
Why consider it?
Alongside a broad technical environment, you'll be supporting infrastructure with a meaningful purpose: enabling scientific and medical research. The package includes:
- Total salary of 47,544 β 52,456
- 30 days' annual leave
- Additional organisational closure/holiday days
- Excellent pension scheme
- Training and development opportunities
- Cycle-to-work and employee discount schemes
The position is predominantly on-site in White City, reflecting the hands-on nature of the infrastructure and the research environment.
If you're an Infrastructure Engineer, 3rd Line Engineer or Systems Administrator looking for broader technical ownership and the opportunity to work in a genuinely interesting scientific environment, we'd be keen to hear from you.
