You will be joining a leading Tier 1 contractor delivering highway maintenance services on behalf of a local authority. This organisation is responsible for ensuring the safety, functionality and upkeep of the local road network, working closely with communities and stakeholders.
Your new role
As a Highways Safety Inspector, you will play a key role within the maintenance team, acting as the eyes and ears of the network. You will assess public enquiries, carry out inspections, and ensure highway defects are identified, categorised and managed effectively in line with KPIs and safety standards.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out site visits and inspections following reports from the public reporting system and operations centre
- Identifying, categorising and logging defects onto the Works Management System (WMS)
- Assessing risks and determining appropriate remedial actions, including minor on-site repairs
- Acting as the first point of contact for emergency call-outs and incidents on the network
- Liaising with customers, local authorities, and stakeholders to provide updates and technical advice
- Managing and responding to enquiries relating to third-party assets
- Supporting out-of-hours or winter service operations on a rota basis
- Advising on vegetation and environmental issues affecting the highway
What you'll need to succeed
- Previous experience in highway maintenance and/or emergency response
- A strong understanding of health and safety practices within a highway's environment
- Good IT skills, with experience using management systems for logging and reporting
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage confidently with the public and stakeholders
- Strong problem-solving and risk assessment capabilities
- A proactive and professional approach, with the ability to remain calm under pressure
- A full UK driving licence
