As part of this journey, they have engaged with Hays to seek an experienced Commercial Director to provide strategic leadership, enhance commercial governance and drive sustainable business performance. This is a rare opportunity to join a growing organisation at a pivotal stage, working closely with the board to shape the commercial strategy and build a scalable, high-performing function capable of supporting continued success.

Your new role As Commercial Director, you will take ownership of the commercial function, leading the commercial team while ensuring robust commercial processes, controls and governance are embedded across the business. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic commercial leadership and supporting the board with business growth objectives
  • Leading, mentoring and developing the commercial team to create a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Driving commercial awareness throughout the wider business, particularly across operational teams
  • Implementing and enhancing processes across bidding, procurement, forecasting, cost control and project reporting
  • Ensuring strong commercial governance, compliance and risk management across all contracts
  • Managing and negotiating NEC contracts while overseeing contract administration activities
  • Leading budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, monthly CVRs, commercial reviews and margin analysis
  • Providing real-time visibility of project performance, profitability, opportunities and risks to senior leadership
  • Overseeing valuations, payment applications, cash flow management and commercial controls
  • Building and maintaining strategic supplier and subcontractor relationships to maximise value and minimise risk
  • Leading the development and optimisation of ERP and commercial management systems to improve reporting and operational efficiency
  • Supporting major bids, tenders, new business opportunities and the evaluation of growth markets
  • Presenting commercial performance, risks, and strategic recommendations at Board level.

What you'll need to succeed To be successful in this Commercial Director position, you will bring significant commercial leadership experience gained within utilities, infrastructure, civil engineering or construction environments. You will also possess:

  • Proven successful experience leading and developing commercial teams
  • Extensive experience in subcontractor management, commercial negotiations, procurement and cost control
  • In-depth understanding of NEC form of contract
  • Strong commercial acumen with a proven ability to improve profitability, forecasting accuracy and project performance
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the confidence to operate effectively at board level
  • Strong analytical, financial and strategic decision-making capabilities
  • Full UK driving licence.
