Keeping our parks, beaches and green spaces safe, clean and welcoming. 30 Hours per week on a rota basis (Saturday & Sunday Required). Are you someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in public spaces, and likes a role where no two days are the same? We're looking for enthusiastic Seasonal Park Rangers to join our Parks & Cemeteries team for the busy summer period. This is a hands‑on, highly visible role helping to maintain our most popular coastal and green‑space locations across the borough. You'll be part of the team ensuring that residents and visitors can enjoy safe, clean and well‑kept environments throughout the season.
What you'll be doing:
- Carrying out regular patrols of parks, beaches and cemeteries to ensure they remain clean, safe and welcoming for all visitors.
- Identifying and reporting any damage, vandalism or safety concerns, keeping accurate written records and providing statements when required.
- Supporting horticultural and grounds maintenance tasks, including general cleaning duties across park facilities.
- Opening and closing gates, buildings and other lockable areas as directed, acting as a keyholder.
- Assisting with public‑facing events and activities, including working alongside volunteers.
- Operating vehicles, tools and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Completing daily vehicle checks, reporting defects, and carrying out basic cleaning and lubrication.
- Using Council‑issued IT equipment and mobile devices appropriately to record tasks and report issues.
- Following all Council policies, including health and safety, equality, and risk‑management procedures.
- Carrying out any additional duties required to support the smooth running of Parks & Cemeteries services, including covering staff leave or absences.
About the role:
This seasonal post is primarily focused on summer cleaning and maintenance of key tourist coastal locations, though you may also work across other parks and green spaces in the borough. You'll play a vital part in ensuring our outdoor areas are safe, tidy and enjoyable for everyone during the busiest months of the year.
What we're looking for:
- Someone who enjoys outdoor, physical work in all weather conditions.
- A reliable team player with good communication skills and a positive attitude.
- Confidence in dealing with the public in a friendly, professional manner.
- Ability to follow procedures, complete records accurately and report issues promptly.
- Willingness to work flexibly, including weekends or evenings if required.
- Experience in grounds maintenance, cleaning, or similar roles is helpful but not essential.
Essential Criteria:
- Experience of working with the public.
- Experience of record keeping and following procedures.
- To be a good team worker.
- Able to use my own initiative, prioritise tasks and organise time effectively.
- Customer Care - Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including an understanding and appreciation of the needs of the public.
- Prepared to work outside normal hours, including weekends and public holidays.
Appointment will be subject to completion of a medical questionnaire including a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
Desirable:
- NVQ Level 2 in a relevant community or environmental subject or an equivalent qualification.
- 3 GCSEs or equivalent, including English at grade A-C.
- Hold a full Driving Licence Category B or higher driving licence as you will be required to drive a Council vehicle within and between facilities.
