Project: £20m refurbishment / new build education scheme

Location: Oxford / Oxfordshire

Hays are working with a well-established Oxford-based main contractor who are looking to appoint a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team on a new £20m refurbishment and new build scheme within the education sector. The business has a strong reputation across Oxfordshire and the wider Southern region for delivering high-quality construction projects for a range of prestigious clients. Their work typically includes education, healthcare, commercial, leisure, heritage, residential, public sector and technically challenging refurbishment schemes, often delivered in live, sensitive or operational environments.

This is a business that has built long-term relationships with universities, colleges, local authorities, public bodies and private clients across the region. They are known for delivering complex projects with a strong focus on quality, collaboration and repeat business.

The role will suit a Senior Quantity Surveyor who wants to take commercial responsibility for a meaningful project, work closely with a strong operational team and join a contractor that can offer genuine long-term progression.

Why this role stands out

This is not a role where you will simply be managing paperwork from a distance. You will be closely involved in the commercial delivery of a live education scheme, working alongside the project team and having clear visibility across procurement, subcontractor management, cost control, reporting and final account.

The company has a strong pipeline of secured work across Oxfordshire and surrounding areas, with projects that are varied, technically interesting and often delivered for prestigious regional clients.

For someone who wants to progress, this is a good opportunity to join a business where Senior Quantity Surveyors are trusted, visible and given the opportunity to develop within a supportive commercial structure.

The role will involve:
  • Commercial responsibility on a £20m education refurbishment / new build scheme
  • Managing procurement and subcontractor packages
  • Preparing and reviewing subcontractor orders
  • Managing valuations, variations and payment notices
  • Producing accurate cost reports, forecasts and CVRs
  • Managing commercial risk and identifying opportunities
  • Working closely with the Project Manager and site team
  • Supporting contractual matters where required
  • Managing subcontractor accounts through to final account
  • Building strong relationships with the client, consultants and supply chain
  • Ensuring the project is delivered commercially, contractually and operationally to a high standard
What they are looking for

The client is looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor with strong main contractor experience and the confidence to take commercial ownership of a sizeable project. You should have experience working on refurbishment, new build or education schemes, ideally with project values in the region of £10m-£20m+. Experience working in live environments, occupied buildings or technically challenging schemes would be beneficial.

The successful candidate will need to be commercially aware, organised and confident dealing with clients, consultants, subcontractors and internal teams. You should be able to manage detail, control risk and bring a steady commercial approach to the project from procurement through to final account.

This role would suit someone who wants to work for a respected regional contractor, deliver interesting projects and continue progressing within a business that offers long-term opportunity.

What is on offer
  • £75,000 - £85,000 salary
  • Company benefits package
  • Opportunity to work on a £20m education scheme in Oxford
  • Long-term progression within an established regional contractor
  • Varied pipeline of work across Oxfordshire and the wider region
  • Chance to work on technically challenging and prestigious projects
  • Supportive commercial and operational team
