A leading financial services organisation is seeking an experienced Infrastructure Operations Engineer to join its technology function. This organisation is committed to delivering exceptional customer service through reliable, secure and resilient technology platforms. With a strong focus on collaboration, continuous improvement and employee wellbeing, this is an excellent opportunity to join a business where technology plays a critical role in supporting customers and driving operational excellence. This is a hybrid role offering flexible working with the expectation to be on site in central Cardiff 8 days a month.
As the Infrastructure Operations Engineer, you will take ownership of business-critical platforms, including core banking systems, payments services and job scheduling environments. You will play a key role in ensuring these platforms remain stable, secure and highly available, while supporting the ongoing development and improvement of operational processes.
You will lead the technical response to major incidents, coordinating recovery activities, providing clear communication to stakeholders and driving issues through to long-term resolution. Acting as a senior escalation point within the team, you will provide expert third-line support and contribute to the successful delivery of operational and service improvement initiatives.
The role will involve managing platform health through enhanced monitoring, automation and operational tooling. You will oversee system and database administration activities, ensuring performance, resilience, capacity and recovery requirements are consistently met. You will also be responsible for supporting disaster recovery planning, business continuity testing and the successful delivery of complex system changes and releases.
Working closely with development, infrastructure, security teams and third-party suppliers, you will represent IT Operations across a range of technical and governance forums. You will also contribute to the growth of the wider team by mentoring colleagues, sharing knowledge and promoting best practice across technology operations.
To be successful in this role, you will have proven experience within IT Operations, Infrastructure or Production Support environments, ideally supporting business-critical systems within a regulated organisation. You will possess strong incident management experience and be confident leading technical discussions during high-pressure situations. Experience working with mainframe technologies, particularly Unisys environments, alongside strong SQL Server administration skills including performance tuning, troubleshooting, backup and recovery processes, will be highly beneficial.
You will also have experience supporting Windows environments, PowerShell scripting, and Azure DevOps. A strong understanding of job scheduling platforms, monitoring tools and automation principles is essential, together with a solid appreciation of ITIL and ITSM frameworks. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proactive approach to continuous improvement, risk management and service reliability, while also having the ability to mentor and develop less experienced colleagues. Professional certifications within ITIL or related disciplines would be advantageous, as would experience delivering large-scale automation and operational improvement programmes.
Salary up to £58,000, flexible working (8 days a month on site in central Cardiff), 36 days annual leave (including BH), excellent maternity (39 weeks fully paid maternity leave) and paternity leave (20 week paternity leave), as well as fertility treatment, adoption, surrogacy and fostering leave and flexibility for carers. Private Medical, 4x Life Assurance, plus other employee discounts schemes.
In return, you will have the opportunity to work within a collaborative and forward-thinking technology team, supporting critical systems that have a direct impact on customers and business operations. You will gain exposure to a varied technical environment, work on high-profile projects and benefit from opportunities for professional development and career progression. The role offers flexible hybrid working arrangements alongside a comprehensive benefits package and a supportive culture focused on employee wellbeing and inclusion.
